Pakistan, Iran become 'natural allies'

not at all, how was it Iran that gave Gwadar to Pakistan or helped ? moreover, didnt they took away some part in Ayub Era from us?

Iran didn't allowed oman to sale out gwadar to india. I think till today Iran considers Pakistan a buffer zone between india and iran.

ayub then gifted some land along with sunni baluchis to Iran that infact was snatched and taken away by british from iran and it is insignificant as compared to strategic gwadar.

It is infact good for us that atleast they agree to the borders with ayub and did not asked to return more of it that was taken away by the british from them. Ayub also gifted Askai to China.

On 8 September 1958, Pakistan purchased the Gwadar enclave from Oman for $3 million. Gwadar officially became part of Pakistan on 8 December 1958.

In 1955, Makran acceded to Pakistan and was made a district - Gwadar then, was not included in Makran.

In 1958, Gwadar and its surrounding areas were reverted by Maskat to Pakistan. It was given the status of a Tahsil of Makran district.

On July 01, 1977, Makran District was upgraded into a division and was divided into three districts of Turbat (now Kech since
1994-95), Panjgur and Gwadar. .

do you have have any info that done deal with india was reversed by Oman due to Iran's opposition.

actually there was a dispute. some area that was under Oman control is now part of Iran. I think they attacked and captured and let us have this part for 3 million. or we bought all the piece from Oman, but a part of it attacked and taken by Iran !! I am not sure though how things went... or maybe the area Iran attacked was some other part of Baluchistan !

I will have to confirm how things happened... thanks though :)

anyways disputes do occur, but if interests of today are mutual and have people to people relations...then why not go for strategic partnership

Balochistan means LAND OF THE BALUCH .....It is OUR LAND not iranian land or parsi land!

While the moron gifted Aksai Chin such a big territory to china .... What sane country does these things??

But our country is blessed with alot of ...tards!

After reading such an articulate article, I had to go through the torture of reading Tiki Tam Tam's comment. Totally killed my nerd buzz, thanks chief.

The OP has quoted an article by one of the few Indians journalists who consistently try to bring Pakistan into an alliance of the Asian countries. Mr. Badhrakumar writes very interesting and original articles in the Asia Times.

And he is right here: Pakistan and Iran are natural allies. He is right that the friction that existed over the conflicting interests in Afghanistan in the late 90s is over-taken by the common fears of American forces in the region. Oh, how, American blundered after the OBL raid in trying to run their 'do more' policies via calculated, scathing, often incredible 'news stories' about Pakistan; they pushed a bit too much. Hollywood style 'diplomacy'. Pakistanis are paying back.

BTW, while it is true there are sometime Shia-Sunni conflicts in Pakistan, there is no way the kind of friction one sees in countries like in KSA who are in mortal fear of the Iranian influence. Shias in Pakistan are patriotic Pakistanis who often make it to the highest positions: Zulfi Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, and Zardari were/are all Shias. They are much integrated.

Having said all this, I don't think Pakistan is willing to annoy either Washington or Riyadh too much. Sure, there can be some overtures to Iran--who must be salivating since the OBL raid over the prospects of Pakistan becoming more friendly to them. But Pakistan will cross some lines with Washington should it go too far. I don't know what those lines are: Perhaps some kind of power sharing agreement in Afghanistan post America? Perhaps significantly increased trade? I think, given Pakistan-Iran relationship importance, we can probably use a dedicated topic about those red lines.

PS. I see, NY Times is quiet for several days about Pakistan. No more 'anonymous Obama officials' leaking highly dubious, incredible stories blaming Pakistan on the front page.

'natural allies'

if some country use this term, it means there is something fishy....

1. Mr Manmohan singh once told "India and Pakistan are natural freinds"
2. Mr Obama said "India is America's natural ally" (After Fishing Indian IT industry and after providing weapons to pakistan)...

So be careful when some diplomat says, "We are natural ally"

We would be greatful if you feel the same for eastern countries... :pakistan:

Actually any speck of common sense dictates that Pakistan and India are natural friends. This fight is senseless. For heavens sake we are virtually the same people, have been for thousands of years. There are no two nations so alike as these two. The pickle in the middle is Kashmir. Neither of the two will back down from their respective claims on the issue.

ps: We would also be greatful if you felt the same for your western neighbors...

I believe Iran and Pakistan are natural allies, they have many strategic interests in common. Pakistan is severely energy deprived, Iran is has abundant energy supply. They both have brilliant scientists and engineers and could cooperate together. Iran can transfer nuclear civilian technology and Pakistan can provide Iran possible nuclear warhead designs, if it need be. And of course, stave off American imperialistic policies and hegemony in the region.

I think the partnership would be more of a geo-stratigic and geo-political nature. Pakistan is not energy deprived by any means. We have all the oil we need (Saudia deals with us under the table, with subsidies), we have enormous natural gas reserves and oil and gas is already being imported from Iran (You might remember the Iran-Pak gas line). And im not counting the untapped reserves of oil and gas inside Pakistan. The civilian nuclear tech is already being worked on with collaboration of the Chinese.

ps: The electrical power shortage is due to other f**k ups. Interesting fact: our power generation plants arent even working at normal capacity due to these f**k ups. Many arent operating at all.

Actually id call this a pretty good judgment call back then. Firstly half the Baluchistan, so to speak, i.e. Baluchi population is in fact a part of Iran (like half of punjab belongs to India and half to us). The entire ethnic and cultural Baluchistan is not and has not ever been a part of Pakistan. We share it with Iran. Secondly these lands "gifted" to China and Iran were and still are geographically more a part of these respective countries than Pakistan and they hold little to no significant importance for us. The Goras indulged in many an atrocity when they were here. These lands did rightfully belong to them, we didnt just give them away because we were in a benevolent mood. Thirdly look at what we gained by settling these disputes. Look at what China is today for us. Not only did we gain peaceful borders but we gained an amazing friend. Iran too before the revolution was undoubtedly quit a close friend of ours, they were indeed the first ones to recognize us.

Infact Nothing given to Iran by ayub. http://gulf2000.columbia.edu/images/maps/IranTerritorialChanges_lg.gif

Territories exhanged with Pak and Iran in 1958 are shown in above MAP and are insignificant as compared to Iranian land we got from British.

But does Pakistani Intelligence Agency consider Iran an ally? Just today read in this forum about news circulating that "Three important political personalities of Pakistan have close ties with intelligence agencies of India –the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) – and Iran, and are behind the ongoing incidents of violence across Karachi in compliance with the orders of their foreign masters."

'dream' of the Persian empire? We don't need to dream about it buddy. We've been there and done that... many times. The question is why are you so hung up on this issue?

So what are we supposed to do now? Repudiate and disown our history and identity to make you Arabs and Arab wannabes feel more secure about yourselves? Or always walk on egg shells lest we offend your fragile egos? Suck it up and grow up buddy...
