Pakistan falling behind India, BD on multidimensional poverty: Source OPHI

OP you are trying too hard to prove something that most forummers here know already, riaz haq selectively uses data to justify his own bias, he is no scholar.... this thread is wholly unnecessary, you are generating traffic for his business, that's all.

LOL don't make me laugh.

India has more poverty in percentage and in population than Pakistan has.

@RiazHaq, @Joe Shearer, @Nilgiri

Pakistan which until 2010 was ahead of India and BD on multidimensional poverty index seems to have fallen back in the last few years.

Dear Brof Riazul Haq sb, what do you make of the latest findings. If correct, your hypothesis about democrazy being bad for Pak holds true. Under Mushy, Pak was beating India (0.23 v/s 0.28 comfortably), now India, BD turning tide. Time for the Pak fauj to do their patriotic duty?

Brof Riazul Haq sb jawaab do!!! Jawaab do!!! jawaab do!!!

Regards

I've been saying it for sometime whenever usual quarters bring up OPHI (for pakistan having supposedly less poverty than India) that if the more recent data for India is used from similar year ranges that was done with Pakistan in the 2016 (and prior) reports, India would be much closer to Pakistan in MPI (ignoring again that OPHI has always said cross-country direct comparison using MPI is of limited utility to begin with). But it seems India is even "better", and this has created much butthurt among those quarters at this reality.

India poverty measurements is also undergoing much reform in World Bank. Watch for those updates in coming years....it will anger the same set of people.

Someone earlier though said we should not be in the business of comparing to Pakistan and I fully agree with it....we have a long way to go. Let Pakistanis do what they want with their country and if they want to distort and cherry pick (without serious analysis) numbers from all over time and space to compare with India and BD with no standardisation/proper discussion (and replace that void with their biased so called perception)...then let them....and at same time we must respect and appreciate Pakistanis that take cognisance and neutral approach to their problems and not drag India however they think possible to feel better about it.

We must be more focused on lifting our last tranche of destitute people out of poverty and near-poverty and into middle class at faster rate than before. Push HDI to above 0.700 ASAP, GDP PPP per capita past 10k and the inertia from that will solve the problem better than anything else can.

@RiazHaq

Brof sb,

Applying this (OPHI MPI) measure to data from the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) survey for the 2014/15 period, we found that the country's Multidimensional Poverty Index stands at 0.197.

The OPHI MPI stats that I have quoted are from their 2017 analysis. Their country briefings are based on 2012-13 data for Pak, 2011-12 data for India. Now if you insist on estimating the MPI for Pak based on extrapolated numbers for 2014-15 at 0.197, you must also accord the same courtesy to India. Else we are comparing apples with oranges.

Are you daft?

India has more poverty than Pakistan has.

Can you repeat again for me :P

Your article may be from 2016 but data used is very old,
Pakistan is competing with likes of Bangladesh/ Nepal when comes to economy,
BD will overtake Pak in GDP per capita in a year or two,

look for reputed sources like IMF / Worldbank/ Unicef / Global auto, steel, association/ leading research companies in technology. I can put down credible and reliable sources, but I want you to do the homework so this forum can be saved from your garbage posts in future :P

In all below mentioned indicators Pakistan is in league of BD and not India

Generic Indices

Per Capita GDP
Per Capita Income
HDI

Economic Indices
Per Capita Electricity Consumption (Average Indian consumes 1.5 times that of Pakistani)
Per Capita Steel Consumption (Average Indian consumes 3 times of Pakistani)
Per Capita Cement Consumption (Indian figure is 1.5 times of Pakistan)
Per Capita Automobile purchase
Road network per person
Railway per person
Percentage of people travelling by flight (or % who can afford air travel)
Penetration of 3G/4G
Penetration of smart Phone

Health Indices
Life Expediency
Per Capita Daily Calorie Intake

.
Talli,

Now it may seem counterintuitive given that I have started this thread in the first place. But I will be cautious in concluding anything from the mere fact of per capita consumption number being higher for India. It is a matter of fact that inequality is higher in India and overall higher consumption numbers may not necessarily translate into higher consumption numbers for the bottom half of the pyramid.
