The VIS NVIS Aircraft Formation Lights allow pilots to spot position and attitude of other aircraft during military formation flights.

The Infra-Red (IR) and Visible (VIS) Formation lights have been designed for harsh environments and are qualified for operation on fighters and attack helicopters.
Two versions are available: IR and VIS.

On night combat missions, the fighter aircraft do not switch on their regular high visibility position lights (on wing tips) and anti collision lights (the bright red strobe) to maintain stealthiness. However since they still need to maintain close formation during ingress/egress, the pilots need visual cues to determine their relative position to other aircraft in the formation/avoid collision. These strips of lights have very low intensity and are only visible at close formation distances. Some lights are even only visible in infrared domain so don’t even have a visual signature.

What is the relation between these and the AESA? The F-16 Block 60s have them too. In fact, every 4th generation aircraft that receives an AESA upgrade gets these.


No relation at all .. even old F-series fighters in the USAF had them.

Is it me or the cameo would have been a lot better if it wasn't for it's blue underbelly? Something darker would have been much better.
Blue/ light grey under belly blends with the sky when you look up from the ground. If it is a darker shade then it will stand out. Makes it easier to spot.
Only for visual spectrum.

No relation at all - most modern cars now have daytime running lights but it has no connection with them having a hybrid engine , normal ICE or fully electric.

Formation lights have been around on non-AESA jets as well long before AESA came into play. Where they are useful is aircraft undertaking night strike missions where they are more visible and better in positioning for flights.

logical, but why aren't these lights so noticeable on other aircraft , say on JF-17 like they are on J-10?
Some include the type on the J-10 and some don’t - they are an additional cost and add weight in addition to the traditional lighting. More importantly, they are very specific to the night use case.

Some of the symbology on the screens looks similar to the JF17 Block III as does the layout ... interesting find.

Looks similar to the following which wasd considered to be the cockpit of the J10B at the time.

Is the lineage as follows : J10A -> JF17A -> J10B/C -> JF17C interms of the evolution of the man machine interface and cockpit layout ?
