only 643 Billion Dollars is setting China's Economy apart from overtaking the US now

I am deeply troubled that you and Genesis, despite having lived in North America, believe that tap water needs to be boiled before it is consumed. ... ?

I'm not too 'troubled'. They're KOOKS !! Hey guys, I suggest you boil your water while swinging a chicken over the pot and LOUDLY chanting, 'Boom shack a lack a boom shack a lack a' ! That'll make your water REALLY clean, guys.:enjoy: Oh yeah, hop up and down on one leg, too.

It seems that money grows on trees in the US. How many TOW missiles is the US sending to Syria? A million?

Do hyperbole and logical fallacies grow on trees in your yard?

If that was what Genesis was trying to communicate, then he misunderstood Peter C's point. People must boil water when state protection of consumers is weak, when manufacturers can pollute the water supply without restraint. (Although boiling water will not be sufficient in such a scenario). In the US, there is residual pollution from previous decades of unrestricted manufacturing, but local governments thus treat the water before it is delivered through pipes to ensure it is safe to drink. This comes from environmental awareness, like imposing the additional costs of "clean coal" technologies to reduce pollution, or regulation to ban lead pipes or lead-based paint.

In other words, a citizenry without a government that has an environmental mindset will have to look out for itself (by boiling water, for example). When the citizenry demands the government address the environmental causes (reducing pollution, cleaning water sources, etc.), it will not have to perform that function itself.

Yeah, it's so incorrect that it seems like trolling. Bottled water is processed for taste, not safety.

No, I am pretty sure that boiling water is a good practice in general.

WHO | Managing water in the home

Just because it is not necessary to boil it in some where, it doesn't mean boiling water isn't good practice. In fact, it is one of the most cost effective hygiene practice in existence along with things like washing hands and bathing daily. Plus, boiling water only treats bacteria and other micro-organisms and has nothing to do with industrial pollution.

Generally speaking, boiling water doesn't hurt. It just doesn't help in the United States, since the water is already treated and is safe to drink. When I travel outside of the first world, I drink only bottled water.

So you have been to Cancun too eh? :-)

A waste of time here. The water out of the tap is required not to be boiled. If there was a hint of a problem it would basically put the food business...well out of business. Nobody would buy salads, ice cream, fountain drinks, ice cubes, etc. Plus people would be so paranoid they would carry their own sterilized utensils/plates/cups when going out.

Heh, a lesson hard learned. My most difficult time was in east Africa, because even the bottled water couldn't be trusted.

Now you know full well from I think a post of yours a few pages back that many bottled water brands come straight out of the tap! Maybe a canned carbonated beverage would be safer. Something canned usually means boiling...but maybe not soda.

What can I say, I make a lot of mistakes, and I learn a lot. Now, if I have any doubt, I travel with water treatment tablets and a prescription of antibiotics, just in case.

China's economic model is unsustainable. Most of their population lives in abject poverty. Their model implies they have to keep up the growth rate for their economic model to work. As we have seen in recent news. Chinese economy is showing very bad signs and there is evidence the Chinese government is covering up. Soon the whole thing will be crashing down burning.

China should be the biggest economy, its not an achievement, its logical considering their people, population and size. As has been stated though if I was to be born tomorrow in China I would probably be fairly low on the economic ladder with few opportunities, I think it will always be similar to India where the economic disparity is gigantic and I dont think theres any fix to that, if you have that many people it is literally impossible to satisfy everyone, many will be left behind.

As I come from a fairly poor background myself (albeit in a country where being poor means you dont get all the channels on your tv package and you dont get the new computer you want every year) II would like to think that for the poor people in countries with huge populations that all they need is time to balance things out but realistically more time is just going to increase the amount of poor people far quicker than they can be appeased. I think China can cope with slowing down the population but places like India are going to have like 25% population increase in 20 years due to the poorest reproducing the most which just leads to exponential growth in poverty figures, China/India need to cut down on reproduction because sooner or later it becomes a weakness, the most stable countries with the best living conditions tend not to have to many people.

This is true, it is about population vs. resources.

With a population of 1+ billion, even with our enormous demand for minerals/resources across the planet, we are still a developing country. Name any country in the world, and we buy resources from them in huge amounts.

With such a huge population, even all the resources in the world are not enough.

In truth, the world will need a revolution in renewable energy if China and India were to become developed economies in the future, otherwise there simply would not be enough resources, the demand would be so far above the production capacity that all commodity prices would shoot through the roof. Which would destroy growth rates.
