Nobel committee warned not to award peace prize to Chinese dissident

Isn't the internet wonderful? Any idiot without the basic facts can run their mouth like they are an expert.

. .
congratulation to the winner. its a victory for free people of the world against dictatorship.

If you think that is what happened here, you are ignorant of the situation. I see this Nobel prize as a good thing for China but not in the simple minded way you do. This prize has revealed to the Chinese people the west is not their friend. They promote democracy and freedom not for the benefit of the Chinese people but for their own selfish purpose.

Those in China only know the west from inside China, and some harbour an overly optimistic view of it. By giving the Nobel prize to an appalling anti-Chinese racist, it will serve as a wake up call for those who still think the west are acting selflessly to benefit China.

Another personal observation, Chinese who are abroad have a tendency to grow less and less enamoured of democracy and western society upon personal experience and they rarely think about democracy and westernization in an naive utopian way as those democracy activists do inside China.

Frankly, I agree with some of Mr. Liu's point of view. I'm even somewhat against jailing him.

But this bestowment of prize won't help China's democratization, only reflects Westerners' sinister intention of sabotaging a unique system that is different from theirs, from their standards and their values.

As the unique system, nonconforming to Western norms, grows and ameliorates itself, the Westerners are puzzled, perplexed and, subsequently, scared: the they thought such an alien system should have collapsed and rotten just as Soviet long time ago.

well i too support Liu,he is fighting a non violent battle against the govt for what he believe is right,he should not have been jailed, but I am here not talking about Liu,I am here talking about Nobel peace prizes which which is somewhat controversial as far as i think,I suspect it is nowadays more used for playing cold politics, were does asking for a multi party system anyways amount to peace

Why am I not surprise that you'd give your whole-heart support upon hearing the words "non-violent" resistance. Funny how you've a judgement on him without ever reading his stuff.

One of the guy who voted is famous here: Glucksmann
he is philosopher ... with strong anti communist ideas
so because of some people of course some ideas reflect in the decision
but in the same time you should understand the history of communism in Europe: it was an important parti after war then it transformed ot a small parti now. most people are either socialists (moderate left ring) or marxists who are in opposition with some foreign communist countries

For exemple the most famous marxist candidate is advocating for Liu
I met him on the place in Toulouse once. you cannot say he is not communist but communists are different kinds depending of the country

For Nobel prize Gorbachev, he is a great man because he could avoid any violence. And he works for good relations with USA but is strongly working to support its country.
This is not an opposite behavior to try to have good relations with a country and not depending on it.

It would help if you could give a small account of the case against him or the anti social activities he was involved in. How is he perceived inside China?

I've not read his stuff personally but from what my parents tell me (both fairly unbiased people), he basically rejects all aspects of Chinese culture and tradition as backwards, and that China needs to adopt/replace everything with a western way of thinking.

This is where his infamous China needs 300 years of colonial rule comes from. He thinking colonial rule that happened in other places is what is necessary to throughly breakdown Chinese society.

He is not perceived well in China.

And that's the only perception that really counts in this matter.

External opinions are fine, but they have no weight or importance regarding such issues.
