Nobel committee warned not to award peace prize to Chinese dissident

Wait, this guy really said that?

Countries like Australia (I've went there) are dying for an identity differentiating from their ancestors of Britain, and this guy talks of throwing away culture of a country.

Yes, he even uses Hong Kong as an example of the success of colonialism, which proves that he knows sweet FA about Hong Kong.

Hong Kong was always more of a "city-state" which is why it was easy to administrate. Same with Singapore.

Look at actual countries (rather than cities) in order to assess the impact of colonialism towards countries. It could go moderately like British India... or it could go the way of Nigera, Sudan and Somalia.

.
Seriously, China telling the Nobel commitee not to give the prize just about guarenteed that they would. If they had given it to any one else there would have been claims they backed down in the face of Chinese pressure. Better approach would have to been to say they didnt care in the first place.

Ho ho, and why do you think CCP didn't deliberately want the Nobel committee to award the prize to Liu. Because Chinese are not idiots and they can see the news and make their own conclusion.

I think it is safer to say that the MAJORITY of Chinese are not idiots. There are plenty of Chinese bootlickers who have no respect for their own culture.

Just to remind the joke of Forbes:
Power Women 2010 - Forbes.com
Hey you Chinese people why didn't you get ONE chinese woman in the list? ok ok there is no Iranian too
Berlusconi and Lady Gaga: wow :hitwall:

In some things perhaps yes, the CCP rather than chinese in general.

Some times its just better to ignore the problem rather than grandstand about it. After all if the CCP didnt do a song and dance about each time an obscure old tibetan monk traveled some where we would probaly be saying Dhali who?

.
With all the other medias the ccp don't need to do any reporting on Dalai Lama. What they did is issue a political stance because if they don't it would seem that they are agreeing with the DL.

Fengqins are annoying too. They sort of reinforced outside view of chinese being mindless retards. Also I have to say that the mannerism of the red guard generations (the 60, 70ers) are not something to be proud of, and indeed they probably contributes to negative views of china.

And what was that exactly,"Inciting subversion of state power",a popular tool to fend off Human right campaigner's

About non violence,i dont think that guy is given 11 yr rigorous punishment for throwing grenades at Chinese forces,is it

Frenchman jailed for insulting police on Facebook < French news | Expatica France

01/10/2010Frenchman jailed for insulting police on Facebook
Rights campaigners have condemned a French court for handing down Friday a three-month jail term to a teenager who insulted France's paramilitary gendarmes on his Facebook page.

The 19-year-old man posted the remarks after having been pulled over in January by police in a traffic check and forced to continue his journey on foot, said prosecutors at the court in Brest, Brittany, in northwest France.

He singled out for his insults the local gendarmes at Faou, in Brittany, but the officers came upon the remarks, which had been online for three months.

The court ruled that the remarks constituted a "public outrage", and as well as handing down the three-month jail sentence, ordered their author to pay 1,200 euros in damages to the officers concerned.

The defendant was not in court for the hearing.

Internet sans Frontieres (Interet Without Borders), which campaigns for free speech online, denounced the severity of the sentence.

This was the first time that someone had been handed a jail sentence for this kind of offence, it said.

Sorry, even if only words, if there is damage to the country or any personal need sanctions, in accordance with the law. The West as well.

And he is not just words but action, he was opposed to China's Constitution, which is why he was tried, the legal sanctions.

it is not the same thing at all.

this guy insulted the police. and he was drunk when he was arrested (not on facebook but on the beach he was making such hell).
well in france if you insult the state authority it is possible but rare to go to jail. only if it is extrem.
then they give you maximum 3 months including 15 days that you really do (he'll stay 15 days): this is the legal systemin France: you have the minimum days to spend and if you are a good guy you can leave the jail and not do the maximum days (here 3 months)

but people are upset because local police (gendarmerie) access the internet to check his profile
it is new. it is the new law named Loppsi: police can access web and even take your account if they consider it is useful. without permission of the judge (so independant authority since in france justice is independant):
this is criticized from the without borders reporters. they say that protecting the source would not easy if such a law applied .

Different? You say this is not the same, I say the same, even if only of speech, as long as the harm to others, the state, laws that require sanctions, no problem, people will support.
