I actually think that there not being a line succession of in KSA (formal at least) is a good thing because this way mainly people competent enough to become Kings would be elected as a consensus is needed.
In other words then it is a position that is mostly based on merit. As much as this can be the case in a monarchy. While in most other monarchies the succession is based on descent by seniority. So a eldest born child of a king or crown prince will inherit the throne no matter if his/her brothers or sisters are better suited for the throne.
