PESHAWAR: Though the fate of talks between the Nawaz-government and the Taliban has yet to be decided, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) warplanes pounded militant hideouts in North Waziristan, ,reportedly killing many local and foreign militants, security sources told Geo News.

According to the sources, the aircraft bombarded suspected militant hideouts in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan as part of surgical strikes which they said should not be taken as military operation.

They said that the strikes were carried out after the military leaders took the civilian government into confidence citing potential threats to the people of Pakistan from terrorists holed up in their safe heavens in the country’s tribal belt.

The sources said that the attacks were aimed at protecting people of Pakistan as the militants were making plans to carry out terrorist attacks.

They added that if the government decided to launch an operation, the PAF warplanes will attack the militants in the first phase and other steps would be taken shortly after the weather conditions improve in the mountainous region.

The sources told Geo News that the recent attacks were carried out on the basis of credible intelligence information and there was no fear of collateral damage.

This either the official start of the offensive, or another "warning" to the Taliban to accept the ceasefire.

Makes sense, anyway a good job by PAF indeed, but to solve the issue of terrorism, root of the problem must be addressed, which is to educate people not to believe in superstitions!

Well neither is easy and atleast people are realising it now. It's a long war ahead. Buckle up.

Peace talks between the government and militants have stalled
Pakistani fighter jets have launched air strikes on suspected militant hideouts in the north-west, killing at least 15 people, local officials say.

Raids focused on Mir Ali town and surrounding areas of North Waziristan, but military sources said strikes were also carried out in the Khyber area.

Peace talks between Pakistani government negotiators and Taliban militants broke down earlier this week.

On Sunday a Taliban-linked group said they killed 23 paramilitary soldiers.

Those killings and other violence in the past week caused the suspension of the talks, and triggered Thursday's raids.

"Air strikes were carried out to target militant hideouts with precision. A huge cache of arms and ammunition have also been destroyed," said a Pakistani official, according to Agence-France Presse news agency.

Other reports quoted intelligence officials as saying that foreign fighters were among those killed in the North Waziristan air raids.

Khyber raid
Military sources later told the BBC that the overnight air strikes had been extended to the Bara region of Khyber district, the BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad reports.

There is no Taliban reaction yet, and no independent confirmation.

Casualty figures from the Khyber strikes are not yet known.

The source said that the air strikes targeted hideouts of militants who were allegedly involved in the grenade attacks at a Peshawar cinema house on 13 February, and the 18 February killing of a Pakistani army officer.

Militants based in the Mohmand tribal area said on Sunday that they killed the 23 soldiers, who had been abducted and held since 2010.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the reported deaths and said these would have a negative impact on current peace talks with the Taliban.

Government negotiators called off a meeting scheduled for Monday following the reported killings.

Pakistani jets also carried out strikes on militant hideouts in North Waziristan last month, following a wave of attacks against security forces.

Will IK/PTI & JI protest against this carpet bombing of the tribal areas by PAF jets, like they vociferously agitated against the anti-Taliban drone operation by NATO?

20 to 30 thousand. Spread out thin in groups of 5 to a 100. Not easy nor enough firepower without the risk of civilian casualties.

Since the Taliban are spread out among the civilian population, how is PAF able to avoid civilian casualties when they conduct anti-Taliban strikes in waziristan?
During PTI/JI's anti-drone agitation, we kept hearing a lot about the civilian deaths as the reason for the agitation. What is the civilian casualty numbers due to PA/PAF's anti-Taliban operation in the tribal areas?

The idea of peace talk with these animals was disgusting as initiator of this process. We have no place for these goons in our territory. We shouldn't accept them as potential fraction but just criminals whose fate is only death sentence.

PAF is attacking their main arms depots and their nerve centers. The Taliban in population will be taken out by the army.
Civilian casualties will be there, but we can only hope for the best right now. The operation is necessary, unless they lay down their arms and dismantle their group. (highly unlikely)

US rules any male under the age of 60 and over the age of 14 as enemy combatants hence the higher civilian casualties. We do not, we have aborted many sorties due to such concerns.

And please i know what you're trying to do. Quit it.

Can you back this up?
How can a pilot sitting in a cockpit of a jet at 30,000 feet altitude know the age and gender of the persons on the ground he is bombing?

Human intelligence, which Americans don't have.

Even though I strongly support dialogue as a solution to terrorism, the nasty section of TTP must be eliminated by operation. Good.. Pakistan needs to gain higher position next time we sit for dialogue.

Human intelligence, which Americans don't have.
They have.......in result they payed thanks to Pakistan Intelligence agencies while spreading their own network in tribal belt but where they damn care of humanity is presence of Muslims in general and Pakistani or Afghani. They used to kill one terrorist out of 80 innocent dead bodies in any planned attack.

Here is difference and Pakistan army is human and Muslim army and tried minimum civilian casualties in ratio of one killed terrorist out of zero civilian dead body.

Helicopter gunships shell militant hideouts in Hangu, 9 killed
The latest airstrikes were carried out in Tehsil Tull in Hangu district.

HANGU (Web Desk) - Helicopter gunships shelled militant hideouts in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing 9 suspected militants and injuring seven others, Dunya News reported.

According to sources, the airstrikes were carried out in Darsamund and Tarawari villages of Tehsil Tull in Hangu district.

Several militant hideouts were also destroyed in the shelling, sources told.

The airstrikes took place a day after Taliban spokesman Sahidullah Shahid urged the government to declare ceasefire first.

The Taliban spokesman, speaking at a news conference at an undisclosed location in North Waziristan, referred to the military strikes and said they are ready for talks despite attacks.

"The government has started the war and should also take the lead on a ceasefire," he said.

The precision bombardment was part of surgical strikes which sources said should not be taken as a full-fledged military operation.

Earlier on Thursday, PAF jets launched strikes on Taliban hideouts in North Waziristan and Khyber Agency, killing at least 40 suspected militants, in retaliation for attacks by the militants.

After several rounds of talks, government mediators pulled out of scheduled dialogue with their Taliban counterparts on Monday amid outrage over the claimed execution of 23 kidnapped soldiers.

On Sunday a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban movement from Mohmand Agency near the Afghan border said they had killed the soldiers who were seized in the area in June 2010.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the start of talks on January 29 to "give peace another chance" following a seven-year Taliban insurgency that has claimed nearly 7,000 lives.

But a source in his office said Sharif, under pressure to avenge the Taliban killing spree, "issued orders to launch the air strikes" after being briefed by military advisers.

A total of 93 people have been killed since the reconciliation effort was launched at the end of January, including the kidnapped soldiers, according to an AFP tally
