Mela is an urban festival of performing arts and cultural expressions from around the world. The festival's genre and includes many different art forms such as music, dance, literature and theater with a varied program for children, youth and adults. Mela is free takes place at City Hall in Oslo every year. Artistic director for Mela festival is Khalid Salimi.
word mela is Sanskrit and means "when you meet" or "meet". Melas task is to broaden horizons and make art expression that has been around for centuries elsewhere in the world known in Norway. Self Productions where Norwegian and foreign artists collaborating is a mainstay of the festival. Also invests Mela especially on local artists. Mela was held in Oslo for the first time in 2001 and has since evolved to become one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Mela attracts around 300,000 spectators during the festival's three days every year. Mela given node status in 2008.
