What's new

Japan’s first international defense show opens in Yokohama

Impressive, my friend ! I hope that Japan can follow in the footsteps of our Turkish friends in level of success in defense sales. Btw, excellent pictures on those Altay MBTs! Those sure are beautiful , lethal machines...!

- In terms of defense sales.....nothing is impressive about sales as for now...we are still the new kid on the block.

- About the Turkish Defence Fair...yeah, it's 4th big in the world...but not to forget it's our 12th defence fair....Japan will catch up in no time...

.
Japan has the capabilities /potential to be Asia's largest arms exporter only a few years from now. It only needs to change its constitution and allow arms exports. Something it seems to be doing. Congrats Japan, welcome to the block. :welcome::cheers:

As for changing the constitution, the House of Councilors have already mentioned an intent to further 'redefine' Article 9 of the Constitution.

What this means? Offensive fire power will be further developed. With intent for defensive purposes , however. Afterall, Offense is the best defense. :)

maybe Indonesia will soon bagging the first foreign deal ever done by Japanese arms maker company, beside some Coast guard boats granted to Philippine or Vietnam and usual export for US of A. News is in Indonesia, but Indonesia is very serious about Shin Maywa and several other major platform in which can't be mentioned right now as it will alter the balance of power in the region....

US2 ShinMaywa is essential for a vast archipelagic power like Indonesia. This units have a range of 4700 km, provide rapid response teams for logistics, special forces rapid reaction to exigency. This means Jakarta can reach anywhere within the Spratlys without even fear of refueling. Or even fly from Bandah Aceh to Jayapura, Sorong in one flight.

@madokafc , there are some variants of the US2 that can complete the role of a gunship as well as oceanic maritime patrol platform.

Japan’s first-ever international defense trade show kicked off in Yokohama on Wednesday, attracting more than 100 exhibitors as the country aims to ramp up its global security role.

In opening remarks at the three-day MAST Asia 2015 defense conference on maritime security at Pacifico Yokohama convention center, former defense minister Satoshi Morimoto stressed the importance of establishing a system of maritime governance.

“I suppose most participants here would share the view that the Asia-Pacific region is the center of world growth,” Morimoto told the audience, which included high-ranking military officials from a number of countries.

“Maritime security and freedom of navigation based on the international rule of law are the most crucial agenda items for this region.”

Morimoto also said the maritime domain is a “cornerstone” of resource development, since seaborne transport routes account for up to 90 percent of global resource trade.

“As the world population grows, our reliance on oceans as a highway for commerce and source of resources will increase even more,” he said. “I’m confident that the conference and trade show will be (a) significant opportunity for many distinguished members to exchange their views . . . and establish valuable relations over the next three days.”

Organized by U.K.-based, privately-held MAST Communications, the event features forums and debates on topics including submarine and maritime security as well as product briefings by defense equipment developers and manufacturers.

Participating Japanese manufacturers welcomed the conference, saying it will give them a valuable opportunity to showcase their capabilities and technologies to the world.

“Our profile is still low (in the global arena), so we are excited to promote our products to guests from militaries around the world,” said Ryo Motosako, manager of defense programs at ShinMaywa Industries Ltd., which is famous for its US-2 amphibian aircraft.

Motosako said the government’s decision to relax rules on exporting defense equipment last year was a significant step that helped the Hyogo Prefecture-based company to expand its business overseas.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet approved the new export rules in April 2014, ending an almost 50-year ban.

The US-2, priced at almost ¥12 billion per aircraft, can take off and land even on rough seas, a standout feature compared to amphibious planes by other manufacturers.

An official for major heavy machinery-maker IHI Corp. also welcomed the inaugural event.

Among the company’s products are unmanned underwater vehicles for civilian use, which can gather undersea and seafloor information for resources development.

The official said that in light of the move to scrap the ban on weapons exports, the company saw bigger business opportunities for dual-use equipment that can be used for both civilian and defense purposes.

An official for Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., which is promoting its maritime patrol aircraft and an airborne anti-mine helicopter at the event, said they believe their technologies contribute to international peace and security.

“We’d like the visitors to get to know (our products),” the official said. “We hope (this exhibition) will lead to business opportunities.”

Other domestic exhibitors include Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and NEC Corp., while foreign exhibitors include Lockheed Martin, Saab and the Australian Government’s Department of Defence.

I hope that in the future, the Japanese Navy will increase collaboration with the great Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy has a proud legacy of operating carriers throughout the vast expanse of the IOR,
as well as its capability to mobilize carrier task forces from Eastern Naval Command to address
the threats deep into the Persian Gulf. Japan should tap into the Indian Navy's expertise and
operational ability, to learn from them and to increase our joint interoperability --- from the wings of
the Indian Ocean Region, to the Pacific Ocean.

I heard latecomer(Japan) is making quite a splash in the crowded global industry. :)
What is Japan's take on TOT?

The aircraft is equipped with new acoustics and phased array radar systems with enhanced capabilities for detecting and tracking submarines and small vessels. The sensor suite integrates HPS-106 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA), magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) system and Infrared/Light detection systems. The MAD system ensures the detection of submarines by finding magnetic variances made by a submarine in the Earth's magnetic field.

The P-1 will also be fitted with an artificial intelligence system to support TACCO mission. The advanced onboard combat direction system provides the TACCO operator with the best flight path to attack a submarine. The aircraft can be integrated with radar warning receiver, missile warning system, electronic support measures and countermeasures dispensing systems.

The XP-1 is powered by four F7-10 turbofan engines of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. Mounted below the low-set wings, each engine generates a thrust of 60kN.

The high bypass ratio turbofan engine achieves low fuel consumption and low noise levels. The aircraft incorporates the fly-by-light (FBL) system which offers increased resistance to high electromagnetic interference (EMI). The FBL system uses fibre optics to transfer flight control commands at higher speeds.

Thanks buddy!!!

Happy hunting !!!

Go for Saudis and other GCC members. They are shopping like crazy and recently, especially Saudis, has begun to diversify their shops, decoupling a little from the US which used to monopolize the their market.

There is money to be made there, especially given that Saudis are in war against Yemen and also have just made a sacred Sunni alliance with Turks against Syria. They will not stop until they get what they want and the war will certainly be a lengthy one in Syria.

There are, indeed, hot buyers in the Middle East. You're so direct @TaiShang ! lol.

That's very possible, but I suppose the Macross series have a higher chance ... :-)
