It's Official! India to Export BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles to Vietnam!

That are only DRDO hopes, but the simple fact is, as long as we don't have anything to export, we will not export! That's even the reason why we are the most importing country in the worlds, so let's not fool ourself here. Tejas is a long shot, Arjun obviously too troubled and maybe to costly, Brahmos is capable but also a costly weapon for most nations, not to mention that in it's current version many potential export countries won't have the platforms to use it, like India will have. Sarars not even close to be developed, IJT...we will need at least till the end of the decade, to improve our capabilities in R&D as well as production, to a useful level that will open chances on the export market. Today, there is hardly anything than Dhruv / Rudra, Cheetha or partially of Do 228 NGs that we could export.
For exports we are barking up the wrong tree... Best export potential resides in ALH Rudra and LCH, along with Sarayu class patrol vessel type boats, FAC's, Astra I/II, Pinaka MRBL, MCIWS, 80mm mortars, Auto grenade launchers, Light armored vehicles. We can be next naval ship building hubs provided our yards start providing custom modular packages for small navies around the world.

@sancho,

Vietnam has to just place an enquiry for purchase - all other things can be ironed out in the followup.

They can do, the problem however is, what can we offer? Tejas is not ready developed and even if, it will need Israeli and US approval to export it. Brahmos sub and air launched versions are under development and even if ready, Vietnam can't use them, since they don't have suitable platforms for it (Flankers would require the same modifications that the MKI will get during the next upgrade). Do they have vessels that could carry Brahmos? if not, the only version we can export is the land based version and then as said, all we have today is Dhruv / Rudra, or Cheetha helicopters that we can export.

True, the naval developments are much better than the aero field and show some potential (although there should be a huge potential for Dhruv, Rudra in Vietnam too). One problem however will remain the fact that a lot of developments are custom version for IN requirements. Not every countries need the capability a Shivalik class Frigat offers and would want to pay that much. The lower end vessels, with patrol boats and corvettes might be more interesting for export potential, but even that needs time.
