Really?
About a year before the shooting down of the passenger plane, USS Stark was hit by an antiship missile. What happened there? Why didn't the Stark shoot down any aircraft in response to being targeted?

Because. ....
1. To target Exocet, which has inertial guidance and terminal radar homing, you don't necessarily need to have the attacking aircraft paint the target with radar.
2. The pilot fired the first Exocet missile from a range of 22.5 nautical miles (41.7 km), and the second from 15.5 nautical miles (28.7 km), just about the time Stark issued a standard warning by radio. (So, they were aware of the aircraft)
3. The frigate did not detect the missiles with radar; warning was given by the lookout only moments before the missiles struck.

No weapons were fired in defense of Stark. Phalanx remained in standby mode, Mark 36 SRBOC countermeasures were not armed until seconds before the missile hit. The attacking Exocet missiles and Mirage aircraft were in a blindspot of the rear oriented STIR (Signaal tracking and illumination Radar, part of the MK92 Guided missile fire control system), and the rear oriented Oto Melara 6/62 compact naval gun, but in the clear for the WM-25 (aka MK 92 Combined Antenna System, primary search and tracking radar of the Mk 92 Guided Missile Fire Control System) and the Mk 13 Mod 4 single-arm launcher. The ship failed to maneuver to bring its Mk 75 and CIWS to bear before the first missile hit

Citing lapses in training requirements and lax procedures, the U.S. Navy's board of inquiry relieved Captain Brindel of command and recommended him for court martial along with Tactical Action Officer Lieutenant Basil E. Moncrief. Instead, Brindel and Moncrief received non-judicia punishment and letters of rteprimand. Both opted for early retirement, while XO LtCmdr Raymond Gajan Jr. was detached for cause and received a letter of admonition.

But we don't know what Iran has done to the F-14 since then as I pointed out. And its proven that the F-14 can be modified to ground attack. So saying the F-14 has no ground attack is pretty much thrown out the window. Iran has already shown they can modified their aircraft or other weapons systems.

Iran still operates some Tomcats that are being modernized to extend their operative life. Domestic upgrades include avionics, weapons (R-73E, AIM-54A+ “Fakkur”, AIM-54A, AIM-7E and AIM-9J are among the air to air missiles adapted to the aircraft’s fire control system) and color scheme: indeed the plane was give a three-tone Asian Minor II camouflage pattern resembling the one adopted by Russian 4th and 5th generation fighter planes and U.S. Aggressors.

Indeed, we have 'no idea'... This is a 2013 report of the CURRENT upgrade. The discussion was about F-14 at the time of the Vincennes incident (3 July 1988). At that time, just barely around 25 aircraft were operational despite the US embargo: the Iranian had difficulty enough just to keep them flying, let alone modify them. It is possible to use it as bomber, but priiorities were on air defence.

Cowardly because a battlegroup versus a frigate? Funny that you should call Americans cowardly going against Imperial Japan which was superior in numbers. You were stupid to send a frigate against a battlegroup just as the Japanese wasted sending a Yamato battleship by itself against carriers. Funny you should mention that the USS Stark was hit by a anti ship missile and they don't want to take chances after that. Think of the timing when USS Stark was hit to USS Vincennes shooting down the passenger plane.



Its been known that the U.S. and other Arab countries supported Saddam against Iran which is no surprise since the hostage crisis.

March 09, 2015 - 11:31TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s domestically-made frigate, dubbed Damavand, officially joined the Navy’s northern fleet in the Caspian Sea on Monday.

The homegrown vessel, an advanced frigate, was officially delivered to the naval forces stationed in fourth naval zone, north of the country.

Ranking officials, including Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari attended the ceremony in the port city of Bandar-e-Anzali.

More than 700 industrial, research and academic Iranian centers cooperated in designing and producing the military vessel, which is also a training warship.

Experts at Iran’s Defense Ministry have installed 25 homegrown electronics and communication systems on Damavand, including advanced naval radars and systems for communication, detection and interception.

Damavand is a Jamaran-class frigate with unique features to meet the demands of the Iranian naval forces in the country’s northern waters.
