Iran Unveils New Anti-Armor Missiles

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran unveiled two homegrown anti-armor missiles on Wednesday.

The missiles, named Toofan-3M and Toofan-7, were put on display at an exhibition of achievements of the Iranian Armed Forces.

Both missiles are top attack projectiles, which strike armored vehicles from above. They detect the target with electromagnetic and laser sensors from above and detonate their warhead at the top of the target.

Toofan-3M, is a new generation of Toofan-3 missiles, while Toofan-7 is considered the newest homegrown anti-armor missile.

Iranian military technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Tehran has always assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

people mock and laugh at countries who reverse engineer/copy such as Iran or China or whoever, but reverse engineering actually helps develop a countries industry which grows and helps them expand and makes more indigenious weapons.

Some do,the javelin is one that does this,however that uses fire and forget ir imaging which is a lot more expensive.Another option would be using things like 120mm laser or ir guided mortar rounds with high angles of fire.

Reverse engineering often gets a totally unjustified bad rep,even tho in a lot of cases the replication of someone elses weapon or technology usually involves as much brand new reengineering as it does reverse engineering.Its certainly nothing to be sneered at.

my question is if the missile can detect the target with electromagnetic and laser sensors then why not dive into it.
just look at the difference of penetration when Toophan directly hit target and when Toophan 3 explode above the target

I think part of the problem would be to have it strike the turret roof you would have to have it fly a lofted trajectory which would either require extra sensors like imaging to have it strike the target exactly or changes to its guidance mode to fly a lofted rather than flat trajectory as it currently does.One of the advantages of overflight is that it makes it harder for hard kill systems to detect as they would also have to start scanning above the tank vertically rather than just horizontally around it as they pretty much do now.Another thing to remember is that the turret top is very thinly armored compared to the front and sides of the turret,so sheer penetrating power isnt of such great importance,another big bonus is that penetration of the turret is virtually guaranteed to kill or disable the turret crew which will put the tank out of action even if the driver can still get the tank back to a friendly area.
Personally I`m very surprised that top attack atgms were not developed years ago back during the mid 80s as it was certainly technologically possible at the time.I also have to wonder what the result of a conflict involving the use of large numbers of top attack tank killers would look like,as we saw the combat effectiveness of infantry/combat personnel/fighters armed with large numbers of atgms in both the 2006 israeli-hezbollah war and the syrian and iraqi terrorist insurgencies.
