Are they planning to sell T-50 to Iran?

Too good to be true, but look at this poster.
It all depends on the negotiations . If sanctions be lifted (I mean UN sanctions ) then we can buy SU-30 , S-300 .... if not , we can't even buy S-200 or even a russian made ak-47 :undecided: (not sure if we can buy a knife or a water gun ) ... btw our Air force is literally dying ( if we don't call it dead right now ).

Interesting information. But only 20 units. That is way too low. And if the government chooses to go forward for T-50, it should be on technology transfer basis, similar to Indian deal with Russia. Otherwise, it would not be of much benefit. It is a good plane though, as it will secure the future of Air Force till 2050 and even beyond provided it comes with technology transfer and in sufficient numbers.

Su-30 was a good plane but its time is coming to end. It will not remain useful in the decades to come since more and more countries are moving towards fifth generation. Su-50 though will remain a formidable and upgradable platform for several decades from now. If we are to waste any money on such projects, it should be on something that remains relative in coming decades. Similar is the case with S-300 which will be obsolete in coming decades. S-400 and S-500 though should be the choice. Here Iran would need a very powerful No-Non-Sense genuine diplomacy with Russia as Indians and Chinese have had for the past 60 years. This is the only way, Iran can get something useful.

Of course ! T-50 is much better than Su-30 but even if all sanctions be lifted , it's hard for Iran to get T-50 from Russians . maybe buying J-31 be much easier .But we all know Russians they always choose west when it comes to choosing between Iran and the West . And US doesn't let it happen . Remember that Mig-29 deal ? We were not under UN sanctions in that era .

Where did you get the number of units supplied from?

Given the fact that US only has 40 or so F-22, 20 T-50 is a good start point. But we need to see if it comes with all its features and as you mentioned, can be maintained and upgraded locally.

I agree but this time west has pissed off Russia big time! Maybe we can get something out of the murky water as we usually do!

USAF has almost 140 F-22s as air superiority fighter.plus hundreds of F-35s will be deployed as multi-role fighter jets.

Well, no country can be a friend of another in the sense of friendships of individuals. It is all national interests at play. But now, the situation is becoming more like the cold war era between West and Russia and I do not think, this is repairable easily or in near future. Iran should capitalize on this new cold war. J-31 is not as mature and probably not as good as PAKFA since, Chinese do not have as much technological edge in these matters as Russians do, so the choice should be PAKFA. As for Mig-29 deal, Russians did deliver it and had even offered co-production with Iran but at the time, Iranian did not have money to pay Russians for a Mig-29 plant to be installed in Iran (or rather the priority was not for money to be spent that way, since it was just after the war and the money was needed for reconstruction of the nation).

And even then, Iran had made the mistakes. As per the diaries of Rafsanjani, Russia at the time had offered Iran to choose whatever it wants, and Iranians had put up stupid failed things on the wishlist (things like Mig-25 or Mig-23). Rafsanjani clearly says that Gorbachev himself smiled and said these are not good for you and started to struck off those things off the list and wrote Mig-29 instead. If Iran had been more thoughtful, it would have put Su-27 as its choice which was much better a plane than Mig-29. In diplomacy a nation should be clear and thoughtful and always ready to take advantage of situations. I think now, there is a chance for Iran to initiate a diplomatic drive to Russia for such technology transfers as Putin is becoming isolated and would remain in power for a long time (till 2025?). T-50, Lada class submarines and S-400 should be on Iran's wishlist when they meet him. Whether he will be ready to deal or not, is his part of play, not Iran's.

And do not pay them until they deliver should be the moto when dealing with Russia or anyone else for that matter (I never understood why Iran pays in full in the beginning, in the rest of the world, they take out a loan usually from the same nation delivering the technology and pay in installments).

Actually they have over 180 of them. And they plan to have several hundred F-35 themselves and several hundred for their allies. Eventually many of Iran's neighbors will have fifth generation fighters in decades to come from Turkey (F-35) to Pakistan (J-31) and other manufacturers like French Dassault also will come up with their own fifth generation design. The world is changing and Iran should be ready for that change. Iran can not depend on 70 year old F-4D fighters in the year 2030 when its neighbors have fifth generation fighters. Some thoughts should go to this for future balance of air power.

The number is in right upper corner of that infograph put there by @Serpentine

Iranian Army Speeds Up Expansion of Drone Fleet

TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Iranian military officials announced on Sunday that the country's armed forces are creating a growing number of drone units, adding that the number of drone flights has grown 800 times more than just a year ago.
"In the structure of the Armed Forces, separate drone missions have been defined for each force; the Air Force has been entrusted with special missions and drone units have been formed in Air Force bases to this end," commander of the Air Force's drone units said on Sunday.

He announced plans to increase the number of home-made drones in the next 5 years, and said the Air Force will also operate long-range drones, specially for very distant missions.

"We are also after increasing the flight duration of drones and their armaments and electronic war systems for possible asymmetric wars," the commander said.

Noting that the Air Force has made major progress in training drone operators and preparing drone bases, he said the flights of the Iranian drones have become 800-folded this year compared with the previous year.
