Iran Kowsar Jet Surprise (production line)

hmm interesting. i wonder if they make the engine endogenously in iran even if a copy. if they can make the engine in iran than they have made real progress ahead even of most neighbouring countries like pakistan or india.

You can fit a lot of electronics but the plane would be always limited the the airframe. The F5 is a 50 year old design and in today's battlefield it is outdated. Sooner or later IRIAF needs to get rrid of this.

It was built/passed because that is what Iran’s pilots wanted.

Iran’s pilots LOVE the F-5 more than any other aircraft (even F-14).

So the pilots must know something we don’t.

Defense minister stated that working on the next generations of this platform will continue for 10 to 20 years.

Interesting. A production line of this proportion takes time to setup and out of sudden we see an assembly line in full work. Some one has been busy. Great achievement.

It requires a large amount of well trained labour and machines. So if this is the production line there must be a casting and moulding line in the background some where.

I wonder if airframes are truly brand new built from scratch or if they are cannibalizing old F-5 airframes.

TEHRAN – Iran’s top military officials on Saturday inaugurated the mass production line of a locally designed fighter jet, state television reported.

In a ceremony in the central city of Isfahan, Army Commander Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi and Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami inaugurated the production line of ‘Kowsar’ at Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Company, a firm affiliated to the defense ministry’s Aviation Industries Organization, the Tasnim news agency reported.

“Soon the needed number of this plane will be produced and put at the service of the Air Force,” Defence Minister Amir Hatami said at a ceremony launching the plane’s production.

Iran unveiled the Kowsar domestic fighter jet in August with President Hassan Rouhani saying Tehran’s military strength was only designed to deter enemies and aimed at creating lasting peace.

State media said the new jet had “advanced avionics” and multipurpose radar, and it was “100-percent indigenously made” for the first time.

Capable of carrying various weapons, the aircraft is used for short aerial support missions.

Some military experts believe the fighter jet is a carbon copy of an F-5 first produced in the United States in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, Iran’s tensions mount with the United States after the reimposition of US sanctions on Tehran.

On Friday, Washington said it will temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian oil when it re-imposes sanctions on Monday to try to force Iran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities.

Even its upgraded version still f5 era is over some 20 years ago

As we see on the picture it is indeed brand new, what Iran needs to do next is to improve its design capability so they dont need to copy other people air frame design.

Kowsar was meant to be a combat trainer for pilots right? Not something we'd be seeing produced in large numbers?

It's a Close Air Support fighter too not just a trainer and Iran would need to produce them in far greater numbers than this to simply be able to produce 200 in the next 10 years....

Although the Owj engine is simply not a good engine for a combat fighter.... You would basically need to put 8 of them on a single platform to simply match the military thrust output of an F-4

But for now this is a great step towards the production of a future more capable Iranian fighter

Actually we don’t see the steel/titanium being constructed from scratch. Could it be an old F-5 frame?

It will take too much time. Decades and Decades... IR have no possibility for cooperation, to limit/shorten their design/production knowledge.
They really need to get a boost from someone, otherwise it's useless in modern warfare if a War/Conflict happen in the coming Decade.

There is a reason why IR choose the F-5 to reverse engineer... While having F-14's and MiG29's and Su's in their inventory...it's because those aircraft are too complicated with their current engineer pool.
