Indian Navy To Acquire 12 Japanese Amphibious Aircraft

We have all seen how valuable time is lost in SAR operations. Dorniers flew in, identify them, transmit the location to base and it goes back to land. Rescue mission is then done with the help of ICG ships and Chetak helicopters only in favourable conditions. Valuable time is lost.
This aircraft can identify, land in water even in unfavourable conditions, take them back to safety. Lives and times are saved. In Fact more then Dorniers we need such aircrafts.

How many squadrons of INAS placed there?
No sqds are permanently based there yet but few Jaguars and MKIs are always operated from Car Nicobar IAF base. Also few P-8Is are operate occasionally from Port Blair naval base.

Can these planes be armed with anti sub weapons.
Yes they can have ASW capabilities if needed.

India has hundreds of islands that it needs to create some sort of connectivity with- the A&N themselves are made up of dozens of island chains.

This unique asset will play a number of, as of yet entirely unaddressed, roles in the Indian forces- long range SAR, potential emergency transport link with their SSBN/SNN fleet away from shore, connectivity with the island territories of India and as a side role Special Operations.

Of these the ICG should be imparted long range SAR duties in the long term, the IN can retain the rest.
A&N islands comprise of 572 islands to be precise!!
Amphibious aircraft is necessary for the surveying and patrolling of remote islands!!

I think the deal is even more attractive because of ToT which can be transferred/utilized in other defense related projects. That is one thing which could justify the investment. STOL seems like a handy tech for Naval LCA.

@Abingdonboy ?

looking at cost I feel there are many things that are coming not the Plane alone, Its sensitive not point in making it public as reservation is for the Japanese side

SAR ops sir.. the present SAR capabilities are very limited.. on top being amphibious it can land in water easily and take out the affected parties from sea fly down to land airport and send them to hospital

In some configuration they can carry limited small number of troops.. that can be quick reaction teams.. With almost 4500 km range, it serves us awesome in and around india and preferably around Andaman and Nicobar.. IF we get military tech on them and use them for ASW role we can get them to do much more (not sure if Japan will agree installation).

They are very capable birds and wills erve us in a big way.. Some assets would come under IN surely but majorly under CG for SAR.
When the deal first floated, I heard that the critical IFF kit needed for surveillance during wartime will not be installed in the aircrafts while being transferred to India as the Japanese constitution debars export of any weapon grade technology.

Why not make one ourselves

Most probably installation of our own system in the aircraft (thus transformation of those birds into an weapon grade asset) will also be blocked by the law of their land.....hope the political leadership find some loopholes in the law and come out with a decent solution.

I don't know why Japanese are being so possessive about this platform

No. For Coastal SAR duties all around Peninsular India. The requirement for Andaman and Nicobar logistics needs 3-4 aircraft at the most.
yeh 3 to 4 aircraft and how many did you guys order? 12 so its suited for both sar and the andaman and nicobar islands

As they are, the Us-2 Amphibs are not weapon platforms; neither does the IN look upon them as such. Primarily they perform SAR and Logistic tasks with a secondary MPA role.

Is'nt that what I have written in my post? Most of them will operate from Mainland Peninsular India.
