Indian MoD issues RFI for 650,000 assault rifles
Rahul Bedi, New Delhi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
03 September 2018

India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has invited responses from local manufacturers by 20 September to a request for information (RFI) regarding the supply of 650,000 7.62×39 mm assault rifles for the Indian Army (IA) for an estimated INR120 billion (USD1.69 billion).

Issued on 31 August, this is the fourth alteration made by the IA since 2011 to the qualitative requirements for the rifles, which are set to be procured under the ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’ category of the MoD’s Defence Procurement Procedure 2016.

The latest RFI lists revised requirements that supersede those stipulated by the IA when the MoD approved the local manufacture of 740,000 7.62×51 mm assault rifles in January 2017 for all three services, including 550,000 for the IA.

every 3 month they issue such tender

They want another fn caliber wow.

The only rifle that has any chance of getting through IA brass is one that wires cash to the bank AC of the brass every time a soldier fires a bullet. No other gun has any chance.

The absurdity and disgrace that is the procurement process of Indian army deserves a stand up comedy show of its own.

Lol another drama by IA's top brass & MoD while some of my fellow Indians argue they aren't corrupt. The moment they receive their kickbacks, they will cancel the tender and re-issue a new one all over again

Corruption and kickbacks are the same reason why Tejas has been delayed so long but that suits Pak's perspective that it is a dud but in reality, HAL/DRDO/ARDE sucked up a whole lot of funds and IAF delayed it further because they wouldn't receive any kickbacks if they go for an indigenous fighter. As long as privatization of DPSUs takes place, this scenario will thrive.

I hope MoD procures ARs at least for the troops deployed on frontlines ASAP

7.62×39 its not fn calibre its kalashnikov

No, they cant make their mind up. First multi caliber, then ditched all 3 of those rounds for 7.62*51 for main infantry, all the while the carbine 5.56 is going on, than now they add another tender for a caliber.
