India would stop excess water given to Pakistan under Indus Water Treaty

Imran khan use this issue to his advantage.
The real way to win the hearts of punjabis.
Immediately order the construction of kalabagh dam...owing to the threat of India stopping water.
Anp has no value and Sindhis are busy in nab cases...
To tell people that we would dry up. And we have no choice left but to make this dam and it is out of control now and start construction of this dam.
People party would how under huge case in nab and others.

And I have not seen a single punjabi against kalabagh not even. People of kpk and balochistan. Only. Sindhis have been feared by ppp.

Indians elected him because they were tired of Congress corruption. And the scale of his victory was heavily tilted because of sweeping UP.

Congress has gained recently, like BJP loosing three key states, but still Modi/BJP seems like they will make it through.

Pulwama actually can backfire and can be a blow back...now the initial sentiments will turn against Modi because of the anti-incumbency factor(walk the talk thing), which is now against Pak.

India’s minister for transport and water resources Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that his country would stop the flow of fresh water from eastern rivers to Pakistan which is guaranteed under the Indus Water Treaty, ARY News reported.

Gadkari went on to claim that the government had started the construction of Shahpur Kandi Dam on Ravi, which would be used to divert the river’s water to Jammu and Kashmir.

Members of the Indian government have been calling for ‘water war’ against Pakistan by blocking the flow of eastern rivers after India failed to substantiate its allegations against Pakistan following Pulwama attack.

“We will stop the flow of three rivers that provide water to Pakistan; we will use that water in Kashmir and Punjab for our people”, he was quoted as saying.

Pakistani authorities, on the other hand, dismissed the Indian claims that it could stop Pakistan’s water, saying that the neighbouring country lacked the capability to deprive Pakistan of its share of water.

Deputy Indus Commissioner Sheeraz Memon said that it was not possible for India to stop Pakistan’s water.

“Modi had asked for a briefing on this soon after swearing in as the prime minister, but he was told it was not feasible”, said Memon.

This is not the first time India has faced a fact-check. Following 2016’s Uri attack, India tried hard to walk-out from the Indus Water Treaty so that it could block Pakistan’s water, however, many of its own intelligentsia rubbished Modi-led government’s claims.

The move has come amid rising tensions in Kashmir after an attack on an Indian military post. Pakistan's PM Khan separately authorized his military to "respond decisively" to any "aggression" by India.

The announcement came as tensions between India and neighboring Pakistan continued to soar in the wake of a deadly terror attack in the disputed Kashmir region last Thursday.

India blames Pakistan for the attack, which killed 40 paramilitary soldiers, whereas Pakistan denies any involvement.

Water usage rights in the region are covered by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which gives India control over the eastern Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers; and Pakistan control of the western Indus, Jhelum and Chenab.

Gadkari, whose ministerial brief includes transport and water resources, also announced that India had begun construction of a dam on the Ravi river, a major tributary to the Indus.

Most of Kashmir, located in the Himalayas, is split between Pakistan and India, with both sides also claiming the right to the other's portion. The first full-blown insurrection in the region erupted in 1989, with insurgents demanding independence or unification with Pakistan.

Both issues, water and borders, have been the cause of war between the nuclear neighbors in the past. They have gone to war twice over Kashmir and have been engaged in talks over water rights for decades.

Khan warns against 'aggression'

Addressing India's threat of a "jaw-breaking response" to last week's attack, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday authorized his country's military to "respond decisively and comprehensively to any aggression or misadventure."

Khan also reiterated the contention that Pakistan was "not involved in any way, means or form" in the Kashmir attack, adding that it was "conceived, planned and executed indigenously."

Pakistan says unrest in Kashmir is a result of India's "military occupation" of the region. It has offered its assistance to India in the investigation to find and punish the perpetrators of the attack.

Everyone needs to relax.
India is using 93% of the water given to them. This move is just to divert the rest of the 7%. Pakistan in the long run can and should invest in desalination plants run off solar energy. That can easily replace that 7%

.
They can use fully "There own share of water" ..No problem in it ..What's the issue here

.
Lol. If you had the capability or the guts you wouldn't be deploying proxies.

Proxies. Both sides use them. India under Congress had the advantage, now things are different thanks to modi. Bla and tpp capabilities have been reduced. Indian influence in Afghanistan is being curtailed.

JABALPUR: Reiterating his warning to choke Pakistan's water supply, Union minister Nitin Gadkari Friday said the neighbouring country won't get "even a single drop of water" from India if it continues to export terror.

The senior BJP leader was addressing a meeting of party workers of Jabalpur region here.

"(Pakistan PM) Imran Khan and others in that country are saying: how can India stop water to them? Remember, if you continue to support and export terrorism to India, Pakistan won't get even a drop of water. Remember this," Gadkari said.

He said India was planning to build projects on three rivers flowing into Pakistan to use its share of water. "Our government will stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan," he said.

The minister's remarks came amid anger in India over the Pulwamaterror attack, for which Pakistan-based Jaish-e- Mohammed has claimed responsibility.

Gadkari recalled the Indus Water Treaty, a water- distribution treaty between India and Pakistan signed in 1960 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistans President Ayub Khan.

"As per the treaty, of the six rivers between Pakistan and India, Pakistan got three rivers and India got three. The water which was ours was also going into Pakistan.

"We are making three projects under which water which is ours by right will be given to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan," he said.

"The Indus accord says it was signed to maintain harmony, peace and brotherhood between the two nations. But today, when we think of this accord, we feel where is that harmonious relationship, where is that friendship, where has our cooperation and coordination gone," the minister said.

Pakistan is supporting and sending terrorists to India which is contrary to the aim with which the treaty was signed, Gadkari said.

If Pakistan wants good relations with India, they should stop supporting and sending terrorists to India since friendship and cooperation are "two-way affairs", he said.

The Union Cabinet in December had approved the Shahpurkandi dam project on the Ravi river in Punjab, a move that was intended to help India arrest its share of water flowing into Pakistan.

For this, central assistance of Rs 485.38 crore for irrigation component over five years from 2018-19 to 2022-23 was also announced.

In September 2018, Punjab and the Jammu and Kashmir governments had signed an agreement to resume works on the Rs 2,793-crore Shahpur-Kandi project, according to officials.

Earlier Friday, Gadkari also laid the foundation stone of the Rs 758.54 crore flyover to decongest traffic in western parts of Jabalpur city.
