India, Russia sign deal for another 42 Sukhoi combat planes

MOSCOW: India Friday signed a fresh agreement with Russia for the licensed production of 42 Sukhoi fighters for which the Russians will provide technical and equipment support.

The new deal comes a week after an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI crashed near Pune in Maharashtra following which the entire fleet of 120 planes in six squadrons has been grounded while the case of the accident is investigated.

The deal was among five pacts signed after delegation-level talks between visiting Indian Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The agreement was signed by Indian Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma, who is part of the prime minister's delegation, and Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Director M.A. Dmitriev here in the presence of Manmohan Singh and Medvedev.

India had in the mid-1990s signed an agreement with Russia for buying 50 twin-seater Sukhois off-the-shelf that were delivered beginning 1997.

In 2000, the two sides had signed another deal for licensed production of 140 Su-30MKIs by defence public sector undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). In 2007, a protocol was envisaged for manufacture of a further 40 Sukhois.

"The present protocol envisaged manufacture of an additional 42 aircraft by HAL, taking the total Sukhois for the IAF to 272 planes," Sharma told.

^ Sukhoi already has lot of deals under its belt. What should be interesting is , what is included in the upgrade package ? What is upgraded radar ? Cockpit presumably will be Su 35 style , what is the ECM package ? Are we again working with Israelis and French to put in advanced ECM into these Su's ?

One thing is certain - These 42 will be OR atleast the first batch will be the benchmark, all the Su's will definetly be upgraded to this standard.

I also hope that we sort out the engine reliability issues that is plaguing our fleet.

Let me make another Prediction

Should there be a possibility that LCA MK2 Delays beyond 2017
India will order another 30-40 MKI in 2015 , thats coz production of first 126 mmrca will continue till 2022 and MKI production line will be empty in 2017 and India will need to replace 120 odd Bisons by 2017

Radar would be the Zhuk ASE with 25/30 watts per channel and 1650+ T/R Module array (Antony have already spoken about it once in Lok Sabha.)

ECM would most probably include SAP 518 Jammers and SAP 14 ECM pods already tested in Russia on MKIs... along with that it remains to be seen weather the NIIP L-band AESA which are supposed to mounted on the wings of PAK FA would be installed or not... If its Installed it would give Su 30MKI a 360 degree picture and a better capability against stealthy targets(L-bands tend to have better performance over X-band)

Cockpit would be in Su35BM style with little modifications..... weather or not French and Israeli inputs have been considered remains a mystery ... It won't be required in any case since SAP 518 and SAP 14 are very good ECM pods.

A consideration must be also be given to the Indigenous Mayavi ECM pods which would have barrage jamming capabilities.
Besides that structural upgrades are planned with increase in composite level and a new engine which would be Al-31F-M-2/3 with similar thrust level performance to which Item 117C offers for Su35BM...Along with higher Overhaul hours and service life.... here again it would be interesting to see weather the upper fuselage is blended in a manner to support supercruise(like in Su35BM)..

Besides that the weapon package would include K-100, Brahmos and a new set of AAMs.

Very old news 100million$ for supa dupa MKI "Khoda pahar nikla choha", better spend this money to improve FBW system already 2 HAL build MKI crashed due to this technical fault.

The original Su 30K batch is retired...the planes were sold to a third country by Russia.... all the Su 30MKI are from the year 2001-02.

Yes you are right, In Pune AFB these planes are not seen there. The one in the picture is already sold to some 3rd country. These were the first batch of planes which IAF wanted Russia to take it back and replace them.

I don't think so, because HAL and Samtel will upgrade the MKI cockpit mainly with new displays and stuff.

I also hope that we sort out the engine reliability issues that is plaguing our fleet.

Actually the reports said, the engines had serviceability issues, not reliability right? So far no accident was caused by engine issues and neither were they grounded because of that, unlike our Mig 27s.

Mate, you are confusing the numbers and types of fighters that will be replaced and inducted very often.

MKI (270) replaces mainly Mig 23 and 27 (around 200 fighters)
LCA (40MK1 + around 100MK2 planned so far) replaces mainly Mig 21 Bis, M/MF (around 150 fighters)
MMRCA (126+) replaces mainly Mig 21 Bisons (around 120 fighters)

MKI licence production was meant to end in 2015, with the additional 40 (2 directly from Russia) it will be extended to 2017 and when that line ends, it directly will start the production of FGFA!

FGFA (250) will replace 2 sqauds of Mig 27, Mig 29s, Mirage 2000s (around 150 fighters) till 2030 and still have the numbers to replace the whole Jaguar fleet as well, not to forget that AURA UCAV could be available then as well and it is definitely the most suited aircraft to replace the Jags.

If there will be further delays in LCA, it definitely will be more MMRCAs or FGFAs that will be added, since these fighters will be in production by then.
