India raised concern with US because those weapons from US were free. Those were part of US's military aid to Pakistan.

About Pakistan lobbying to US fro blocking AH-64D's sale is never gonna happen.

That will be deadliest combination. AH-64D is a heavy class attack chopper while LCH is world's lightest attack chopper. AH-64D's weight is more than two times that of LCH. AH-64D can carry more weapons. But LCH is stealthy, has more range and better high altitude capabilities. Above all much cheaper.

LCH is a tech advancement in the area of attack chopper. Only heavier attack choppers like AH-64D, Ka-50, Mi-28M can go to high altitude but not as much as LCH while lighter attack choppers like Eurocopter Tiger, A-129, AH-1Z are light but operational altitude is much lower than heavy attach choppers. Though LCH is the lightest still can go to highest altitude.

Looking at the above pics , to me LCH looks like a diet version of Apache Longbow
Now i understand the reason why IAF is acquiring only 22 Apache Helicopters:D , coz these are to be complemented by 179 LCH ie 65 for IAF and 114 for Army:D

GOP should lobby to block the sale because the Apaches will pose a big threat to the land forces of Pakistan.

 hahahaha,

It is said in modern conflicts in order to defeat your enemy you need either overwhelming numerical superiority OR an overwhelming technological advantage. So it must cause Pakistan to feel VERY vulnerable and insecure as they have neither over India. It may even cause them to unleash vicouse and uncalled for rants at their popular neighbour. (maybe even ridiculous conspiracy theories ;)

The only reason India objected to Pakistan receiving F-16s was that these were bought with GIFTED funds from the US to be used to combat terrorists on their side of the Pak-Af border. So India had every right to question why Pakistan needed mult-million, supersonic, 4th gen fighter jets to combat men living in caves fighting with bombs costing less than $10. Whereas INDIA on the other hand can buy WHATEVER they want (excluding some of the most advanced weaponry that is not available to anyone) with their OWN, hard earned cash.

Pakistan is is a NESSERCARY EVIL the US has to put up with to stop Pakistan from funding terrorism against the rest of the world. However India is a country the world wants to do business with, for their own returns and for what they can gain from India. Perhaps this is best demonstrated by the unprecedented number of MAJOR world leaders that have visited India this year. And by the most illustrative example, President Obama completely missing out Pakistan on his Asian tour. It seems Pakistan is quickly running out of the benefit of doubt, whereas before attacks launched from Pakistan were written off, now the World is getting sick of Pakistan's double crossing:

Prime Minister of UK, David Cameron on trip to India in July 2010:

"We cannot tolerate in any sense the idea that this country is allowed to look both ways and is able, in any way, to promote the export of terror whether to India, whether to Afghanistan or to anywhere else in the world."

President Sarkozy in India in November 2010 said:

"It is unacceptable that terrorist acts should be masterminded and carried out by terrorist groups in Pakistan,I call on all Pakistani authorities to step up their efforts and show that they are resolute in combating these criminals."

hmmmm i think India in back doors negotiating with this deal.. otherwise why pentagon will notify congress unnecessarily? if deal is not happening then pentagon will have to face shame from congress

US companies to re-enter race for sale of gunships to India

WASHINGTON (PTI): American military aviation companies have announced their intention to re-enter the race for India's massive USD 1.4 billion contract for purchase of 22 attack helicopters, almost a year after withdrawing from the hunt.

The American intentions were made clear with the Pentagon notifying US Congress about the possible sale of helicopter gunships to India and clearing the sale of AGM-84L Harpoon Block II missiles to the country to arm Indian Navy's about to be delivered P-81 Neptune maritime patrol aircraft.

According to the Pentagon notification, the American aviation giant Boeing will re-bid for the Indian contract with its Apache AH-64D helicopter gunships, which have proved their mettle in the ongoing Iraq and Afghan conflict.

But it is not clear whether the other American armament giant the Bell helicopters may also join the race with its Super AH-12 Cobra attack helicopters.

The American companies had withdrawn from the tender in 2009 as the Indian Government wanted to deal directly with armament companies to speed up the acquisitions to replace its ageing Russian made fleet of 32 MI-24/35 attack helicopters.

After the US companies withdrew from the tender, the Indian Government cancelled the contract at the last moment when only European bidder Eurocopter was left in the hunt.

New Delhi recently floated a fresh Request for Proposals (RFP) earlier this year for the attack helicopters. The acquisition of 22 gunships is part of a massive deal to augment the Indian Air Forces fixed wing fleet by inducting light, medium and heavy lift helicopters.

Besides Boeing and other American companies, EADS the makers of Eurocopter, Augusta Westland and Russian companies are in the fray for the helicopter contract.

"This notification is being made in advance so that, in the event that the Boeing-US Army proposal is selected, the United States might move as quickly as possible to implement the sale," Pentagon said.

The two potential sales, notified to the Congress separately are worth USD 1.6 billion.

The largest sale worth USD 1.4 billion is that of AH-64D Block III Apache helicopters which includes engines, equipment, weapons, training, parts and logistical support.

The second sale of USD 200 million is the package of 21 AGM-84L HARPOON Block II Missiles and associated equipment, parts and logistical support.

"This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-India strategic relationship and to improve the security of an important partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in South Asia," said the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in a statement.

"The proposed sale in support of AH-64D helicopters will improve India's capability to strengthen its homeland defence and deter regional threats.

"This support for the AH-64D will provide an incremental increase in India's defensive capability to counter ground-armoured threats and modernise its armed forces," it said.

"India will have no difficulty absorbing this helicopter support into its armed forces," it said.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency informed the Congress that India intends to use the missiles on its Indian Navy P-8I Neptune maritime patrol aircraft which will provide enhanced capabilities in effective defense of critical sea lines of communication.

India has already purchased HARPOON Block II missiles for integration on the Indian Air Force Jaguar aircraft and will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces, it said.

Good move if India gets them. It will show them the superiority of American Tech over the Russians and Europeans.

You Indians really believe in buying off the shelf compared to attempting to make your own, don't you? Just out of curiosity, I have been noticing that most of your threads in this section are always related to acquiring foreign made systems.

Even Brazil the second emerging country apart from Russia and China besides you in the B.R.I.C. has a strong and emerging indigenous industry. Your indigenous defence scientific base really needs to pick up if you really want to be considered a significant global influence. The Chinese are far ahead in terms of producing indigenous defence goods compared to your country.
