India got corridor, not transit: Khaleda

I would advise my Bangladeshi brothers not to trust the indian state, it is a neo-colonial and hegemonic entity.

People from west bengal are biggest enemy of Bangladesh because they had been left out for indian control. The way people from west bengal campaign against Bangladeshis in US and other places speaks volume of their frustration and hostility. They can always do these anti Bangladesh activities but Bangladesh is way out of their reach.

On the topic: this thread is about how a corridor was given under guise of "trial" transit; let's stick to it. Otherwise we will be forced to open separate thread in indian section of the forum for each off topic discussion indians bring to derail discussion.

"my Bangladeshi brothers" is a nice expression, though a trifle late and misplaced. Some of those "Bangladeshi brothers" who survived "Operation Searchlight" bloodbaths and the nightly swoops on the Dhaka University campus are liable to think differently?!?

p.s. I've met many of them and know their thoughts.

Begum Zia is only talking politics that will bring votes for her party in the next election. Thing is BD has not yet alowed a transit or a corridore. The transit that goes via Ashuganj/Akhaura is only trial. I am for a transit. But, India must pay the bill. India should not expect a free lunch.

About some people's assertion that BD will lose NE market is superficial. India has every right to send goods to that almost landlocked area. It is not true that trade stops when goods are produced in a certain region. Rather, with a little development and govt expenditures, people's income rises and demand of more goods increases. Even a highly developed USA imports so many things.

With a limited transit right, India certainly will not be able to fulfill its commitments to deliver goods in the NE. This is why India is asking CTG port for another volume of transit. But, even with all these NE of India will need BD goods that cannot be fulfilled from Calcutta or Bombay. It is unwise to expect a boost in BD sales by disallowing a transit. It has not brought any export boom so far BD nor it will bring in the future.

Plus points of this transit:
1) India will be paying in the form of construction and development of roads and port in the area which would eventually develop the area.
2) All this development will be done by Indian money but will be done by Bangladeshis hence a job opportunity.
3) There are even talks Myanmar too on the same line, If Bangladesh refuses it will using Myanmar Port, Just because of anti-India sentiment don't loose an opportunity which is win-win for both the countries.
4) Well the for the local Bangladesh steel Companies apprehension of loosing North-East Market, If the price are competitive and quality is good North-East will for sure purchase the goods from you.
Also the Bangladesh steel Companies can use this port development for the export of steel to other countries, there are lot of countries would love to import Asian steel.

It is better to invest in our land routes to the north east states.......its not insurmountable in current age.

With regard to Bangladesh, we should put three layers of barb wires with mines in between.

Let them leave in their paradise.

You are absolutely correct in your assessment. There is absolutely NO REASON why India should get a free lunch in the matter of transit. Transit is a privelege not a right. Which must be paid for. Now India can go further and invest money in upgrading the infrastructure in Bangladesh, which will indirectly help India as well in getting speedy and efficient transit.

Now the matter of trade. There may be (justifiable) apprehensions in BD about Indian trade smothering Bangladeshi industry. This apprehension must be kept in mind and addressed at all times. Not forgetting that Trade is an ever-changing dynamic; BD industry must be protected and nurtured to the extent that the populace of BD remains a long term beneficiary.
However the real wisdom and fact of the matter lies within the second para of the post quoted above. As has been rightly pointed out, markets create themselves. If the product is good and the economics are right, then BD products will find a ready market in NE India. Any attempt to prevent that artificially will only boomerang and the consumer will find ways to subvert that- through smuggling etc. as we already know.

BD industry if nurtured correctly, can only grow and find its place in the sun (including the international sun). BD's RMG garment industry is a case in point. A similar parallel that can be in the regional/ sub-regional context is the BD cement industry. Sound economics ought to take precedence over poor politics.

What??? In 2010 Kokata served only close to 40000 MT of cargoes whereas in 2008-9, Dhaka served 169000 MT of cargoes which should be now more than 200,000 MT.
Besides Dhaka serve most of the international passenger and charge every passenger 120 dollar per departuare whereas Kolkata serves domestic passenger, can charge passenger close to nothing.

Where did you get that data from? :coffee:

Lemme guess, you weren't allowed in one of those Bengali Sammelon they do in US?

People are not so foolish to invest when they can see several problems in the basic business model. Ifs and buts cant get you investment. It is a strong business case that brings in investment. Sorry to say but
1. the airport plan of 7 billion is not cost effective
2. the existing airport is over capacity under utilised
3. Small investment can modernize and cater to traffic for the next 25 years (why invest 7 billion)
4. Nepal, Bhutan, India, China and Burma have regional interests in air traffic and competition will be factored before investment.
5. If India has a good airport ready before the airport work in Bangladesh starts, then you know where the investors will head.

Who has denied this that this airport will not be connected to Dhaka by a metro rail??? Go through the previous posts. But this metro rail will be up to Dhaka not to all part of the Dhaka. For that already there are a separate project. N the project cost for this metro rail will not be as high as the the present one to be built inside Dhaka as cost of land is much higher in Dhaka.

7 billion dollar my a$$, first build it then show off.[\b]

What you are trying to mean by this word "7 billion dollar my a$$"? if your heart is burning seeing the amount then you can put your smelly a$$ with you. No one does care about it. Oh yeah as I pointed out earlier it is the heart of some Indians specially some poor guy from Kolkata is burning as it will more then twice expensive then the indias most expensive Delhi airport and 15 time more expensive then the super rich Kolkata airport.

N regarding show off... Just go n check post 41 or 44 by harpoon who has brought this airport in the discussion. N for the cost what will be the cost of the metro rail according to you???? Even if the rail cost 2 billion usd it will be a 5 billion usd. If I can recall correctly the news said the airport will be connected to Dhaka by metro rail. But did not mention specifically this 7.2 billion usd include the construction cost of the airport. N we do not need to show off this airport to some poor guy from Kolkata who has a airport under construction which is 15 time more "cheap" like the people of Kolkata.

Now go n press report and ask moderator to delete my post. You n Roy Gaurav is best of doing it when some one expose the truth and it hurt your childish ego.

N regarding showing off it is not allowed in islam. It is people like you who try to show off even if you know a simple computer program Java. In Bangladesh the IT people like you roam around in the street and hottie most low paid jobs among the engineers. Anyone even not having a university degree can be a programar or it specialist. But not a nano tech graduate. For that one must have a uni degree and very few top rated uni provide that.

^bla bla bla, like I said before let the airport to be build first, gache kathal aar gophe tel deoar dorkar ki? And I was talking about metro connectivity of calcutta airport idiot.

@iajduni: dhaka airport traffic is about 5 million per year and calcutta will probably touch 10 million bar this year. Busted.

Busted??? on what?
Calcutta airport serves more passeger as Dhaka airport has very little domestic passenger as it is a very small country. I was talking bout the cargo volume not the passenger. Dhaka airport still make more money on passeger from international flights.

Dhaka serves Approximately 4 million international and 2 million domestic passenger annually.
Calcutta serves 1 million international and 8 million domestic passenger.

Sorot bose and him tried till last moment for a secular country for Bengalis and not Pakistan. But you guys refused. Just check your facts. After partition he left Muslim Leaugue and form a secular party now called Awami League.

sarat bose and suharwardy didn't gain support neither from congress nor from muslim league. It was wise decision to join union of india as can be witnessed by drastic decrease of minority population in erstwhile east bengal and east pakistan, I'd not want to live under racist and bigoted leaders. How did pakistan period work out for you?

Even today bangladesh is far from being srcular, ask indian bengali muslim sab or amna ali to understand what secularism is. ;)

Let me get the correct data first, dhaka should have higher international flyer because of large number of bangladeshi workers in middle east, that doesn't mean ****. Kolkata has far wider reach and growing at fast rate.
