India finalizing plans to order three more Scorpene submarines

yes sir i agree with you.....AC can loiter their for day's sailing, but why cant A&N be transformed into a full fledged naval command???we need to put some serious power their, the game is turning towards the chinese, and can we keep SSN's or SSK's their after 2020???
It won't be covered much by the media but the A&N islands have started to receive a LOT of attention in the past 20 months, by 2020 the ANC will be vastly more capable than they are today with more assets from all 3 services deployed. However I still don't see any reason to deploy strategic assets like SSNs or ACs on the A&Ns.

The A&N are a foreward base and will inherently be more exhaustive to keep supplied. The ENC is building vast bases along the Eastern coast for the explicit purpose of SSBN, SSN and AC basing and if the need arises any such asset from the ENC can be in the A&N swiftly.

+ @Echo_419 I wasn't really saying the Government should shame the IA, I was saying the IA may itself start some introspection once the gap between them and the IAF/IN reaches rather humiliating proportions. The IN launched their own satillite a few years back, the IAF is set to do the same and the IA are still running around with Sten SMGs, BMPs and unable to purchase BPJs after 5 years of trying?

Army needs funds too
The Army top brass deserve to get their a$$es kicked hard by the Raksha Mantri asap, otherwise they will continue to throw tantrums now and then without utilizing the CAPEX fund provided to them yearly by the MoD!!They are basically acting nowadays like rich spoil brats demanding only the most expensive weaponry from abroad completely ignoring the indigenous ones that are being develped by the DRDO/ARDE etc.!!

We need 3 nuclear powered 12K ton battle cruiser, capable of launching K-15.

From what I remember, USN did actually build a few surface fleet powered by nuclear reactors. But later were abandoned.

The reason being "economics"...

They did a comparative study, and found that nuclear powered surface vessels can only become economical and affordable only around 2040?(I'm not sure of the exact time frame). They considered the rising oil prices trend spread over the decades and predicted that only around 2040(again,not sure of exact time frame), the cost of operating conventionally powered surface fleet will eventually become equal to nuclear powered surface fleet. Till then, the ships will be conventionally powered. India will follow the same route. A few more replenishment ships will suffice.

Aircraft carrier numbers won't exceed 3.Too costly. One in each coast,1 reserve.

Cruiser thing might happen only after all p15b are inducted.

Sorry to disagree with you sir but I think IN will have atleast 4 ACC..
1 Arabian Sea,
1 Bay of Bengal
1 Indian Ocean
1 as Reserve..

Wrong sir at least 5 one each for every major Naval port
1.Bay of Bengal
2.A&N islands
3.Chennai
4.Karwar
5.Mumbai
+ one for reserve

. .
It is confirmed that China is opening a naval base in Dijoubti, Africa!
its going to be a supply base for forward operated ships and its not chinese territory, so they cannot keep weapons their only replenishment, food and water would be provided....

5 is too much for our navy and also we will have to make or increase all our ships 5X if we want to operate 5 CBG.....thats equal to 25+frigates, 15+destroyers,10+SSN's and other replenishment ships like 5 tankers and 20 ASW corvettes and also 40+ other missile boats.....

if India wants to be a economic Superpower then it needs them there is no other way

but bhai how can we deploy so many ships and resources in peace time??? we cannot put every ship in a CBG......the above mentioned ships will need to be made at least 10+ ships in every category.... that means 25 frigates, 20 destroyers, 10 tankers, 24 kamorta class ships and 24 SSK's and that too in peace time?

Don't get too optimistic too early, always assume the worst and hope for the best.
IF navy wants 70000 tonne nuclear carriers with EMALS which will be enormously costly i can't see how we can afford more than 3.Especially if we want to have 6 SSBNs and 6 SSN's along with it which again are 3 times the cost a diesel sub each. And now they are talking of cruisers.
Lets not count too many eggs before they hatch.
Even 3 carriers will be more than enough for our goals.

we dont have a choice if we have to project power in bay of bengal , indian ocean & arabian sea so as no one tries to bully us then we have to have 5 CBGs at least with independent command plus almost same number of existing naval commands only then no pirate or string of pearls will dare to challenge or harraas owr shipping lines

5-6 aircraft carriers ?? no way..

It depends on the timeframe one is looking at, projecting 5-6 carriers by 2022 would be utterly ludicrous but in 2030-2 when India's economy is the 3rd largrst in the world, touching $9-10 TN USD, and spending >$250-300BN a year on defence? I don't see why not.

For such projects one needs to be thinking 10-15 years down the line and laying the groundwork now, the IN are fully aware of where they would like to be by a certain point and will do what they need to to get there.

Goes without the saying we have to do the cost/benefit analysis as beyond 3 AC and SSBN - gains would be incremental considering all such assets are mainly for deterrent purpose and don't have any utility in peace time (99.999%).

Our defense doctrine as on date is primarily defense focused and not exploratory/expansionary such as China/US/Russia - as and when our strategic posture changes we can make suitable adjustments. For now the focus should be on improving the quality of our assets.
