The ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit is probing why the Indian Board kept quiet about a report of its player Suresh Raina being seen in the company of a woman linked to an associate of an illegal bookmaker, a media report said in London.

Making it clear that Raina was not suspected of any wrongdoing, 'The Sunday Times', quoting a senior ICC source, said the incident related to India's tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year.

With the heightened security concerns following the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Pakistan, the Sri Lankans deputed a former general to look after the Indian team.

CCTV Cameras installed at the Indian team hotel showed that on more than one night Raina was in the company of a woman known to be an associate of a man allegedly linked to a bookmaker.

A report, including the CCTV footage, was submitted by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to their Indian counterparts.

According to the newspaper report, it is the reaction of the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan that has led to the ICC investigation. Instead of acting on the report, Srinivasan is alleged to have got the Sri Lankans withdraw it. 23-year-old Raina plays for Chennai Super Kings, an IPL franchise owned by Indian Cements of which Srinivasan is a vice-chairman and managing director.

The investigation, led by ACSU head Ravi Sawani is believed to be looking into why the Sri Lankans shared the report with the BCCI first when under ICC anti-corruption rules it should have gone straight to the world governing body, the newspaper said.

According to the newspaper, this comes against a background of much talk in India that it was during IPL matches that spot-fixing re-emerged as a major problem.

In August, three Pakistan cricketers -- Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir -- were suspended following allegations that no balls were bowled during the Lord's Test in return for money.

When asked recently about the speculations of match-fixing in the IPL, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said, "The first two editions were not policed by the ACSU. But they realised later on that they perhaps needed more support. The last one was the first time when they fully engaged the ACSU. And we will be engaged in the next IPL season as well."

An ICC spokesman, asked about the alleged investigation into the inaction of the Indian Cricket Board, said, "We don't comment on any investigation." Srinivasan was not available for comment, the report said.

He must be severely punished if found guilty.

Yes surly he be punished severely but I think there should be some rules to determine at what evidence level case may be made public. They simply ruin mental state of a player just on a news report.

Actually the bookie try their best to reach the players. Team management and cricket authority must be careful to prevent it. Player too need to be careful before mixing up with unknown persons.

Players should be the most careful person because they have whole career in front. The cricket board will get another player for its team but the player fired due to fixing will not find any team to play.

If found guilty........he should be severly punished......

But what if found not guilty. Who will be responsible for this defamation and mental torture. We have seen evidence against three Pakistani players and that should have been proved in no time but it could not be proved so far and what is against Raina, he was caught in cctv cams with a woman related to someone linked to some bookie. Who will be responsible for the financial losses during suspension period to these players if not found guilty

IMO there should not be any sympathy for players involved in these acts. ICC or respective board should complete their proceedings and if anyone found guilty should be punished and case story be made public. They may drop player out of team when they feel sufficient evidence is available against a particular player and its just matter of time to prove.

He should be banned from international cricket,
He sold his dignity for money

Who is he? Is he some key player of Indian team as M. Asif?
What is his declared age?

NEW DELHI: The Cricket Board on Sunday described an English newspaper report of BCCI keeping quiet on Suresh Raina accompanying a woman allegedly linked to bookies during the Sri Lankan tour as "baseless", saying that she was the agent of the Indian batsman.

A report in London Sunday Times claimed that ICC's ACSU is probing why Indian Board kept quiet about a report by Sri Lanka Cricket of Raina being seen in company of a woman linked to an associate of a bookie.

Terming the report as "baseless and false", BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said the Crcket Board has not received any such complaint from the SLC.

"The BCCI has just learnt that several media outlets are claiming that Sri Lanka Cricket had submitted a report on Suresh Raina to it, and that no action was taken by the Board on the same," he said in a statement.

"The BCCI would like to clarify that it has received no such report from SLC. The claims being made by a section of the media are totally baseless and false," he said.

BCCI spokesperson Rajiv Shukla also termed the report as "untrue" and said the woman was Raina's agent.

"That is untrue and baseless. It's all rubbish. No complaint had ever come to BCCI from either the ICC or SLC. BCCI had never received any complaint on this matter. Actually, the lady is Raina's agent," Shukla said.

"Raina was with the lady to sign some papers and complete formalities. She was also agent of some Sri Lankan players. It has nothing to do with any anti-corruption matter or any matter outside cricket," said Shukla who is also BCCI vice-president.

"It is just media speculation and nothing else," he said. According to Sunday Times, Raina on more than one night was seen in the company of a woman known to be an associate of a man allegedly linked to a bookmaker.

It said the SLC gave a report to BCCI of Raina accompanying a woman alleged to have links with a bookie along with footages of CCTV cameras installed at the Indian team hotel in Sri Lanka.

The investigation, led by ACSU head Ravi Sawani is believed to be looking into why SLC shared the report with the BCCI first when under ICC anti-corruption rules it should have gone straight to the world governing body, the newspaper said quoting unnamed ICC sources.
