Five dead as IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter crashes in Arunachal Pradesh

NEW DELHI: An IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter crashed Friday morning near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh killing five people and critically injuring one.
Unconfirmed reports said there were six people on board the Mi-17 V5 helicopter, which is a military transport chopper.
The helicopter reportedly crashed around 6 am Friday while it was on an air maintenance mission. A court of inquiry has been ordered.
The chopper was flying in Tawang sector, bordering China.
In June 2013, an Mi-17 V-5 helicopter had crashed attempting rescue operations during the Uttarakhand floods. As many as 20 people were killed in that accident.
PTI reported in July that Russia last year handed over to India the final batch of three Mi-17V5 military transport helicopters under a previously signed contract with Rosoboronexport, a company of the Rostec State Corporation, that entailed a total of 151 units of the Mi-17V-5 helicopter, produced by the Kazan Helicopter Plant.
Designed to transport cargo inside the cabin and on an external sling, the Mi-17V5 is considered to be one of the world's most advanced military transport helicopters.
Mi-17V5, supplied to India, ranks among the most technically advanced helicopters of the Mi-8/17 type, incorporating the best engineering solutions of previous generations.

IAF chief just bragged about India can start and face a two pronged war and can hit the Pakistan nuclear installations, this is bad in that context.

Irrelevant here...This is about the IAF crash and can be hyphenated with IAF chief statement and not with PA or PAF right now.
BTW why most of such crashes happens in Arunachal Pradesh, an EVM or kind of such tech. used or tested by China, or just the maintenance of that chopper is the problem. Earlier an IAF Sukhoi-30 MKI also crashed in AP, India.

There is no comparison going on. Just reason for higher crash in that region for any flying machine be it helicopter or fighter jet.

Again, You do realize that while India has had two write offs and one substantial damage accidents involving Mi-17 since 2013, Pakistan saw Four Write offs and two substantial damage accidents involving it's Mi-17 in same period ie since 2013.

New Delhi: Five Air Force personnel and two Armymen were killed on Friday when an IAF helicopter ferrying kerosene cans burst into flames in Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh.
The mishap happened at an altitude of 17,000 feet when the Mi-17 V5 chopper crew were getting ready to drop kerosene supply at a forward location.
While jerry cans of kerosene were being offloaded, the net holding the cans got entangled in the aircraft’s rear rotor, sources said. The chopper caught fire and crashed to the ground, killing all onboard.
When the chopper caught fire, one of the crew members jumped out, but couldn’t survive, sources said.
The chopper crashed at 6am, just 10km from the India-China border.
A Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the crash.
The deceased were identified as Wing Commander Vikram Upadhyay, Squadron Leader S Tiwari, MWO AK Singh, Sergeant Gautam and Sergeant Satish Kumar of the Air Force, and Sepoy E Balaji and Sepoy HN Deka of the Army.
“It’s a sad incident. There can be many reasons that led to the crash. It can be weather or technical issues. It is not right for me to comment before the probe report is out,” said former Army chief and Union minister VK Singh.
The crash comes a day before the IAF celebrates Air Force Day.
"Our losses in the peacetime are a cause of concern. We are making concerted efforts to minimise accidents and preserve our assets," Air Force chief Marshal BS Dhanoa had said on Thursday, referring to a string of crashes of IAF choppers and military jets in recent years.
In July, it was reported that Russia and India are holding negotiations for the supply of 48 Russian Mi-17 military transport helicopters with Moscow hoping to seal the deal by the year end.
According to a PTI report, last year Russia had handed over to India the final batch of three Mi-17 V5 military transport helicopters under a previously signed contract with Rosoboronexport, a company of the Rostec State Corporation, entailing a total of 151 units of the Mi-17 V5 helicopter, produced by the Kazan Helicopter Plant.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — A Mi-17 V5 chopper of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has crashed in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh that borders China. All seven people on board, including two personnel of the Indian Army, have been killed in the accident.
Sources told Sputnik that the accident site is mere 12 kilometers away from Tawang — a disputed territory claimed by both India and China. Earlier this year, China had vociferously protested the Tawang visit of Tibetan leader in exile — the Dalai Lama and the US Ambassador to India.
"Mi-17 V5 helicopter was on air maintenance mission; crashed at 6 am (Indian Standard Time) in Arunachal Pradesh. A court of inquiry has been ordered," an Indian Air Force official said.
Last week, a two-seater intermediate trainer aircraft Kiran of Indian Air Force had also crashed near the southern town of Hyderabad during a routine training mission.
"37 fighters and defense aircraft have crashed in the last three years in which 55 people were killed," Subhash Bhamre, India's Minister of State for Defense had told in August this year. These accidents include loss of at least 24 aircraft and five helicopters of the Indian Air Force.
Presently, the IAF is grappling with a severe shortage of aircraft and helicopters. Accidents during peacetime contribute hugely to the shortage.
"Our losses during peacetime are cause for concern. We are making concentrated efforts to minimize accidents& preserve our assets," Indian Air Chief BS Dhanoa had said on Thursday.
