HISTORY OF MALABAR :DISCUSSIONS.

Not sure who came first to where but Malayalee and Sinhala script look eerily similar.. And the life style of Kerala and Lankans are the closest in the sub continent without doubt.. Also there is a significant population of Lankans of Malayalee descent living in the north western parts of the island added to that the thousands that were bought by the Dutch as indentured labour from Malabar to work in the tobacco plantations in the northern Vanni area and the East in the 15th century who have now essentially Tamilized themselves

Another thing is the similarity of the ancient martial art's of Kerala and Ceylon.. Karalaipattu (sic) and Angampora.. May lead to the theory of the warriors that were send to Kerala by a Ceylonese king as mentioned before

Btw what a informative thread.. Kudos

@Ravi Nair

Do they worship snakes in HP and scythia ? :disagree:

It would be unlikely they would have converts from Nairs since that would have put them far below in the social hierarchy. It would not be the practical thing to do. I cannot comment on other casts.

No .I am just saying the hollowness of mere theories .We need proof to validate some theories

.
Its a fact that Brahmins from Mangalore and Tuluoland go to kerala for their religious training especially in Astrology.

But you are mistaken about tulu influencing Malayalam.

Both Tulu and malayalam lipi has evolved out of the Grantha script which was used to write sanskrit test in palm leaves. The Grantha script itself is an evolution from the Brahmi srcipt.

This might help,

There is chance for that .But that might happened thousands of years ago because during those ages there is no Kerala ,no Nair No Ezehavas.Only Tamilakam and Tamil people. All others are evolved just after that

.
??? ...I guess you are mistaking me for some else.

Nope.. Wanted his opinion on your post.. He is Sinhalese and quite knowledgeable on language and linguistics

Yeah but people that were send there probably were Sinhalese and given the time would have been genetically more pure than the current Sinhalese in the island i.e more north Indian

Probably explains why somebody said these Ezehavas look particularly different ?

Chera's used to rule Kerala at least for the last 2000 years or more !!! so what do you mean there was no kerala ? I have even evidence of Kerala-puthra mentioned by Emperor Ashoka in BC ! today is 2014 AD , how many years back was that ?

As far as the script is concerned even South Asian scrip like Burmese, Malayan, Vietnamese, Cambodia etc are derivatives of Indian Pallava Brahmi script.

What is so surprising if Sinhalese is similar :woot:

This should give you some idea,

Ezehavas are not that different than other Keralites.
Infact now all Keralites have a different look than others ,a Malayali style.

Just going by what others have mentioned before in the thread.. I would'nt know the difference of a Keralite and a Ezehavas if the world depended on it.. :-)

Are you aware of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker ? He was a famous Ezhava warrior and Kalari expert who lived from 1825 - 1874.

ARATTUPUZHA+VELAYUDHA+PANIKKAR.jpg

Velayutha Chekavar was born in the affluent Kaalisseril Tharavadu in Arattupuzha, Karthikappally Taluk. The Chekavars of the family were fierce warriors. The family was famous for their proficiency in Kalaripayattu, Ayurveda, Astrology etc. The Tharavadu was a big matrilineal family following Keralas famous Marumakkathayam. His mother's family deity was Kaalisseril Kali and followed serpent worship. There were four big Sarpa Kavu's surrounding the Tharavadu.

So you can see the ezehavas had the same practices as the Nairs.

His grandfather Vallikadavil Perumal Chekavan(Perumalchekon or Perumalchan) was even proficient in Tulunadan kalari techniques which was not common in Southern style of Kalaripayattu. His parents died in his childhood itself. Little Velayudhan studied Ayurveda and Astrology from family Asans(trainers) in addition to Sanskrit and Kalaripayattu including Tulunadan techniques) from his grandfather.

He was reported to be 7 feet tall, muscular, very fair skinned. The story goes that he caught hold of the thief who robbed a Salagramam(Hindu sacred stone) from the Tantri of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Tharananaloor Namboothiripad, during his travel to Thiruvananthapuram through Kayamkulam lake, as per the request of the Maharaja of Travancore. As a compliment the Maharaja gave him the title of Panickan which later became Panicker.

Below is image of Salagrimam's.

He fought long and hard for equal rights for his people. His efforts resulted in a modification of rules that allowed mundu for ezehavas to be as long as other castes and for gold ornaments to be allowed for their women.

7 feet tall???
Ezhavas also have some warrior lineage .Some Ezhava family like Alummootil Channar families are heavily influential during Travancore Kings rule .

Like the great Khali ? :D ..... that part might have been an exaggeration but he was reported to be VERY tall so probably 6.5 or something. In those days he would have appeared like a giant to those around him.
