‘It happens everywhere,’ Bangladesh Finance Minister says of collapse as death toll tops 500

Bangladesh’s Finance Minister played down the impact of last week’s factory-building collapse on his country’s garment industry, saying Friday he didn’t think it was “really serious” hours after the 500th body was pulled from the debris.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith spoke as the government cracked down on those it blamed for the disaster in the Dhaka suburb of Savar. It suspended Savar’s mayor and arrested an engineer who had called for the building’s evacuation last week, but was also accused of helping the owner add three illegal floors to the eight-story structure. The building owner was arrested earlier.

The government appears to be attempting to fend off accusations that it is in part to blame for the tragedy because of weak oversight of the building’s construction.

During a visit to the Indian capital, New Delhi, Muhith said the disaster would not harm Bangladesh’s garment industry, which is by far the country’s biggest source of export income.

“The present difficulties ... well, I don’t think it is really serious – it’s an accident,” he said. “And the steps that we have taken in order to make sure that it doesn’t happen, they are quite elaborate and I believe that it will be appreciated by all.”

The government made similar promises after a garment factory fire five months ago that killed 112, saying it would inspect factories for safety and pull the licenses of those that failed. However, that plan has yet to be implemented.

Asked if he was worried that foreign retailers might pull orders from his country, Muhith said he wasn’t: “These are individual cases of ... accidents. It happens everywhere.”

Muhith, a long-time government official from a prominent family, has been criticized for insensitive comments in the past – even by his own party. Last year when thousands of small investors lost their savings and poured into the streets seeking government intervention, Muhith said it wasn’t responsible and the investors were at fault.

no no no wrong information :P

As far as I know SHW is a two-year course B.A from Eden College. As per her husband's account she passed B.A with grace marks in one/two subjects. After graduation she was married to that unfortunate Dr. Wazed. How come she also attended Cambridge? It never happened. However, she received nine honorary doctorates from different Universities when she was PM last time.

I have a pet theory why she was so crazy after getting those certificate papers. It is because of her husband's genuine degree she felt jealous and found a novel way to get ten degrees, which is possible when a sitting PM aspires to get ones by visiting certain Universities.

Good riddance. Salute to Amanpour.

Kudos to Ms. Amanpour

We are stuck with two incompetent house wives running a country of 160 million. The joke is on us, we are the real morons.

Although Begum Zia isn't highly educated and she never claim to be one but we all can agree that Hasina is conceded, arrogant, cheater and foul moth just like low life village women. Begum Zia at least graceful but being a women, she has some restrictions.

How dare you? CNN is a Jamaati source
Yes, you may be right because the USA, the home country of CNN, supported Pakistan in 1971, and today's Jammat in BD represent that mindset. So, CNN is a Jammati supporter, then. I will not be surprised if some die hard single-track minded Jammati think like this.

Watch how Hasina was trying to cover up export order cancellation by future fairy tale story of economy and investment. Just like captain planet and his gang of people were trying sell Awami League 2020 deception.

Another important fact came out that not only int'l rescue team was barred but also int'l media like CNN was denied entry fearing Awami League will be exposed out in the world.

She should have used an interpreter. She could have given much more nuanced and detailed answer. This interview is painful to watch. :)

Good riddance. Salute to Amanpour.
