Greater China Education, School & University: News & Discussions

@AndrewJin ,

In the United States they have a "cream of the crop" schools which are known as the Ivy League (University of Pennsylvania, MIT, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia etc etc). But there are also great universities in the United States that are not in that list, for example, Georgetown University, University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, Rowan University, University of California (Irving, Berkley etc), University of Stanford, University of Houston, etc etc etc.

In fact some of these schools that are not in the Ivy Ranking have better graduate programs that Ivy schools. For example Dartmouth College (an ivy school) doesn't even have a competitive graduate program. Heck, even University of Chicago (Booth School of Business) is better than Dartmouth in terms of economics, business management, human resource programs.

Its always a multidimensional aspect, bro.
ivy is a league not a ranking, isn't it? So check the ranking of specialty, more reasonable.

Same case as in China, joining Harvard is relatively easier than joining Peking University.
Of course. Asian universities will get much better!

True. But It's about the ranking of specialty!

In fact NUS, NTU and University of HK are third choice for Indian students. If a student doesn't get into IITs, then he/she will try for top tier Universities in US or UK, then comes NUS, NTU and University of HK

To get into IIM Ahemdabad, the top B School in India, the cut off GMAT score is insane 770,while the average GMAT score to get into Harvard Business School is 730.

U can check various ranks...U also need to consider scientific institutions and quality of universities.

J20 stealthy fighter is designed and created in Chengdu, because we have best electronic science and technology University, research centre in Chine.

it suprises me middle east have universities.

Well, Middle East is one of the place where one of oldest university in the world is still running.

Al-Azhar University (ahz-har; Arabic: جامعة الأزهر (الشريف)‎ Jāmiʻat al-Azhar (al-Sharīf), IPA: [ˈɡæmʕet elˈʔɑzhɑɾ eʃʃæˈɾiːf], "the (honorable) Azhar University") is a university in Cairo, Egypt. Associated with Al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo, it is Egypt's oldest degree-granting university and is renowned as "Sunni Islam’s most prestigious university"[1] In addition to higher education, Al-Azhar oversees a national network of schools with approximately two million students.[2] As of 1996, over 4000 teaching institutes in Egypt were affiliated with the University.[3]

Founded in 970 or 972 by the Fatimids as a centre of Islamic learning, its students studied the Qur'an and Islamic law in detail, along with logic, grammar, rhetoric, and how to calculate the lunar phases of the moon.[citation needed] It was one of the first universities in the world and the only one to survive as a modern university including secular subjects in the curriculum. It is today the chief centre of Arabic literature and Islamic learning in the world.[4] In 1961 additional non-religious subjects were added to its curriculum.[5]

Does the architecture have some Japanese influence?

Here, National Taiwan University campus feels like another world because of the strong Japanese feel. :)

I like Wuhan University and Xiamen University!!

Campuses bordering some dramatic land features (mountain or river or lake etc) look impressive, I guess.

In Taiwan, some universities, especially Theology-related/Buddhist universities are located on mountains and they look spectacular.

It does have that neo-classical architecture that is very common in some of the older Japanese universities as well as those in Taiwan. Definitely there is a resemblance.

One of the reasons why I admire and hold Tsinghua University in such high regard is that it was formed in the turn of the 20th century and literally was the epitome of China's movement towards modernization during the interim years of the Qing Imperial Dynasty with the Nationalist Government created by the late great Dr. Sun Yat Sen. In fact, if you ever been to the main hall of the Tsinghua Garden in Tsinghua University one can see the plaque that commemorates the approval of the late Xianfeng Emperor who bequeathed the creation of said university.

The Xianfeng Emperor

Tsinghua University is literally one of the oldest universities of modern China and one that was so critical in the formation of the intelligentsia throughout the 20th century to present. When one hears the name 'Tsinghua University' it carries weight, clout. Definitely one of the top 5 universities in China. And in Beijing.
