After the russian revolution ,Russia was in much worse situation than india in 1947. Its industries destroyed and it was impoverished to sub-saharan status. Stalin turned it around and voila ,twenty years later ,it was a superpower and a near first world country. Under Brezhnev,Russia fell to second world status. Under Yeltsin, to third world. Putin brought it back to second world. If he can free Russia from the tentacles of the dollar supremacy ,then Russia is destined to be first world as the dollar system keeps Russia chained.

Looking at the direction Putin is taking Russia in ,I would think russia to be providing critical resource,industrial tech and military tech services alongside control of supra national banking services in next 10-20 years. Italy would be kind of resource trading hub and luxury goods hub, while Germany a manufacturing hub of vehicles alongside industrial services and partly banking also. East European countries like Greece will try to mooch off Russia in name of slavic brotherhood . Though I think Russia would be exceptionally harsh for UK,USA,albania in providing any financial or technological services.Baltics,Romania will be finlandized .

To be frank being a trading hub is an excellent way to be rich.

Italy and germany have played very neutral in the ukraine ,syrian crisis or prior economic development like pipelines,resource investments. Many of the major corporations with major preferential treatment are german ,italian ones like EON,Ruhrgas,BMW,Siemens and Italian ones like ENI ,Fiat etc.

Same is not so for British and Americans. In a scandal involving BP ,do you know how the offices of BP were raided? Anti-terrorist squads were sent. This is not so for german or italian ones, where Russian politicans call up the investigators to pressure them to be soft or to reduce charges.

No, its more complicated than that. As the deal was made, in 2004, the iranian government even had a member in the board of thyssen krupp. That means iran was involved in the deal one way or the other.

Classification "first world", "second world", "third world" is outdated. There are no more socialist countries , and hence the concept of the "second world" has become superfluous. And this classification has misleading, since the countries of the third world - in fact are capitalist countries.
