Technically, the oldest section of Islam is Sunni which is based on Sunnah taking Authentic Hadiths and Holy Quran into the account. Unfortunately, unforgettable civil war is made into the religion in form of shia-sm in response to the rulers and its community [practicing Sunnah] even though civil war had nothing to do with the religion but more to do with the morality.

What is done is done. Now it is imperative to find middle ground to accommodate both parties [Sunni + Shia] into the one community. Not to mention, there are more section of Islam now more than ever, and i cannot stress how important it is to find middle ground to build bridge in the era of faith with diversities.

Pakistan needs to exercise neutrality in the Saudi-Iran split. We have to make it clear to Iran that Pakistan does not condone the anti-Iran statements made at Riyadh and is only engaged with the alliance so far as it is aimed at tackling terrorism in the Muslim world.
Our relations with KSA are of utmost importance but we cannot let them dictate the nature of our engagement with other nations, that is what comprises the thin line between an alliance and a patron-client relationship.
In that sense I believe that it is a prudent move for Pakistan to allay Iranian concerns on the matter and aim at resolving our concerns with Iran through dialogue and meaningful bilateral engagement.

The issue is that the set of beliefs, writings and records generally referred to as the "Sunnah" got written down almost two centuries after the death of Prophet, be it seerah books, tafseers or the hadith collection. Academically, anything removed so far from the Prophet's era can never be fully trusted.

And you are wrong that only "Sunnis" follow the Sunnah. Shias have "Sunnah" too, but it is not derived from the six Sunni hadith books or the seerah literature like that of Ibn Hisham, al-Tabari, Ibn Saad etc. They have their own seerah and hadith books. From a purely academic point of view, Shia hadith could perhaps be ranked higher in terms of authenticity/legitimacy, since their chains (Isnad) almost exclusively run through the family line of the Prophet. However, the same issue of latency plagues their literature too.

So even if one were to try, who's version of Sunnah is one supposed to accept. As I said before, academically both are untrustworthy since one can never fully discount possibilities like alterations, politically motivated revisions and even outright forgeries within the religious texts that were written after so long. In certain cases, thats all too obvious.

Finally, the religion is not the science exactly. One cannot scrutinize the religious literature with the same rigors as applied to the scientific analysis. If done, what is left at the end can be deemed too "unbelievable". One also cannot go back 1400 or 2000 years to see how events really transpired, or even if they took place at all. Neither is it possible to re-create those ancient environments and simulate the outcome. Therefore, at the end of the road its a matter of belief no matter which side of the debate you choose to be on.
