In the 15/16 th or earlier centuries, religion trumped nationality in defining a nation or loyalties. The way the Castilians/Aragonese saw it, they took their lands back and the invaders were going to be thrown out....before the general expulsion though, they were allowed to stay, some revolted afterwards, a fact that only made the Spaniards believe that they won't ever be loyal citizens.

say, “You will conquer Constantinople. The best commander is its commander and the best army is its army." There is a difference of opinion about the authenticity of this hadeeth; Al-Haakim and Ath-Thahabi classified it as saheeh (sound), while Al-Albaani and Al-Arnaa’oot classified it as weak.
