ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday condemned drone strikes on its soil as violations of sovereignty, after US officials suggested Washington might ramp them up against militants.

The foreign office statement also came a day after an Iranian drone was shot down near the border.

US officials told Reuters this week Washington was hardening its stance towards Pakistan, and a new policy on Afghanistan could see an increase in drone attacks..

“Our position is that drone strikes are counter-productive and violate the sovereignty of Pakistan,” foreign ministry spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said on Thursday in response to the Reuters report.

The United States has been carrying out such airstrikes for more than a decade. The attacks have slowed to a trickle in the past 18 months.

Pakistan has received more than $33 billion in US assistance since 2002, but some aid was withheld last year. US officials have said the Trump administration is also considering withholding some assistance.

“Pakistan attaches importance to its relationship with the US,” Zakaria said.

“We firmly believe that continued close cooperation between our two countries is critical for promoting peace and security in the region and beyond.”

On Wednesday, an unmanned Iranian drone flying over Balochistan was shot down.

Trump seen hardening line toward Pakistan after Afghan war review

The incident followed warnings by Tehran that it would strike against militants carrying out cross-border attacks.

Ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants in April. Iran claimed Jaish al Adl, a Sunni militant group, had shot them from inside Pakistan.

The border area has long been plagued by both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

“Pakistan has already shared the information about striking down of this drone with the Iranian authorities indicating that the drone was struck down by our security forces as it was unmarked and there was no prior information about its flight,” the foreign ministry said.

and pakistan has spent about $150 billion which is more than U.S aid to pak military in 16 years.. this amount could be utilized for pakistan prosperity... U.S should understand pakistan reservations rather than following his own ego... Pak engulfed in this war just because of U.S & in return they are blaming us for everything..

The US should do more and more drone strikes. Pakistan is not someone who follows and laid rules why should anyone else case about it. A country who is harboring terrorist and wants to use terrorism as a tool to further its goal.

read some previous history and correct your knowledge... it was not pakistan who who used & supported terrorists against soviet union... and when you blame some one you should first sweep before your own door. your own current Govt directly threatened to pakistan by using the mercenaries against pak... india is one of them who is harboring terrorist and want to use terrorism as a tool to further its goals which is sabotaging CPEC.. but you miserably failed... we will kill each of your b@st@rd Raw agents... and this time we will not present them in front of anyone....
btw enjoy and listen your monkey jadhav

we can just emphasize our reservations in front of superpower (U.S)... even china & india cant ask a single hursh question to U.S especially if they are master to destabilize your country by spreading the false propaganda around the whole world against targeted nation... that is U.S my dear not india...

.
Condemnations won't cut it. Next time a drone strike is carried out we need to down it. No ifs and buts. If we think that drone strikes violate our sovereignty we need to do something about it.

Pakistan cannot allow the US to again carry out mass drone strikes in its territory under no circumstance. It will be detrimental to our security.
