Dr Abdus Salam and all the wrong choices Pakistan made

Had Abdus Salam been a muslim his candidature would still have been refused. .A prime example is the living legend Edhi who doesnt have even a regular street named after him and the govt. never tried to lobby for him for any recognitions. Simply put we dont really value our assets like we should. Another example is Imran Khan, despite of some shortcomings his contribution to Pakistan are distinctive and not really acknowledged by govt.

Edhi as far as I know does not want any political based prestige or support (he refuses all such donations I have heard and I would imagine getting a street name or such is just an extension of political patronage depending on who is conferring it). Good for him....so maybe thats why govt does not even attempt to try since he has made that clear to the politicians he has met and talked to.

But I think thats different case to Abdus Salam who at least wanted some common courtesy from his country's leaders. I mean he actually had a real chance to be UNESCO director given his accomplishments in Science....UN wont really go for someone from a military background for UNESCO....just look at the list of the director generals that they have picked so far....thats why I feel he was overlooked unfairly by Zia Admin and probably because of his religious background. The treatment by Mrs. Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif was also quite shameful if it is as described in the article.

Someone defaced the tombstone?
Where does so much hatred stem from.

It was done by the local authorities on orders.

If you want to gain a true sense of the ironic, read what happened when he came to India after getting the Nobel.

It was unfortunate that such genius was let to leave the country and he was a patriotic person. I have been following his work. The more I read, the more I became sad to know why Zia let him slip away like that. Dr Salam wanted ICTP in Pakistan but I really don't know what the other side has to say.

He was a shining beacon for the entire scientific community in south Asia. Who didn't want to go to Trieste?

Explain?

What other reason is there for such a distinguished luminary to be treated as follows by your leaders:

and now his epitaph doesn't even make any sense as a final insult. At least carve in Pakistani or something.

I had to look up who he was. Abdus Salam I already knew since a long time ago. I'm not taking anything away from Mr. Yaqub Khan, but Pakistan has produced, is producing and will produce many Generals who may or may not turn into career diplomats...but a globally renowned Physicist....awarded the Nobel prize for physics....thats a one of a kind for any country. The folks at CERN still hold him in such great awe and veneration, I talked to one of the scientists who works there about it.

I mean ask yourself deep down if Abdus Salam was a "standard" Muslim, would his candidature for UNESCO been overlooked in favour of some general by Zia? Would he be treated as he was by Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif? If the answer is he would have been treated different, then ask why? Isn't it enough to be a Pakistani as the identity?

That isn't entirely fair.

Although the Sahibzada was not in Dr. Abdus Salam's league, he was actually a distinguished person who would have shone in any circumstances in any country. He was the only decent man in the entire Bangladesh shambles. He was a decent human being.

I admit that pushing his candidature ahead of Dr. Salam seems faintly ridiculous, but he was not any man in the street. Nil nisi mortuis bonum, or whatever it is; these days I forget a lot.

Bhutto first and then what Zia built upon it, fvcked Pakistan to it's core. Now we are left till eternity with 1973 constitution, which will take the whole country to it's logical conclusion.

In the strange case of 'transformation of Pakistani culture to that of camel-lands"..... what's done can't be undone........

There was 12 years b/w Zia ul haq death and the occurence of 9/11. 12 years enough to reverse the policies of Zia ul haq. How much BB-Noora duo helped or worked hard to stabilize/modify zia ul haq policies w.r.t Afghanistan ? Ameer ul mominnen had an absolute majority in 97. Putting entire blame on zia and letting other scot free is a complete intellectual dishonesty.

There was a reason he was sidelined from Nuclear program. DG Counter Intelligence ISI, DG ISI, DG Military Intelligence, DG Security Nuclear program strongly suspected double role of Munir Ahmed & Dr.Abdus salam in delaying the entire nuclear program of Pakistan. Read up Profile of Intelligence by By DG Counter Intelligence of that time, AQ Khan memoirs as well the sentiments of DG ISI echoed throughout 80's.

Abdul Salam was not a Muslim that's clear, but that doesn't reduce his achievement in field of Physics. Pakistan should have used his skills because using his skills doesn't mean you agree with someone's believes
so u are the authorized agent who gives certificate of being Muslim or not ?

If some person creates a new sect in hinduism distorting the very fundamentals that should never be distorted, will he be still called a hindu?

i have no authority so i would rather refrain from name calling.

Yeah it would have been great for the promotion of science and research in subcontinent. Geo. location does make a huge difference. His work is still shaping the research work. I have not seen the politicians represent Pakistan the way he did by wearing his local dress despite the requirements of Nobel committee for dress (bow tie and tailcoat) etc.

I am not against his removal from the nuclear program because the interest of the state must always come first regardless of how towering a person is. But he could have been positively utilised for non-military research. Govt of Pakistan should have provided the land for ICTP and some funding too. I'm totally aware of the dilatory tactics played by Dr. Munir either due to his lack of knowledge or some other ulterior motives and that's why Dr AQ Khan demanded a separate commission independent from PAEC and directly overseen by PM himself.

Its why I said I'm not taking anything away from Sahibzada...lots of countries produce good minds and personalities whatever their field. Buts its pretty suspicious Abdus Salam was passed over for something he had a really good chance of succeeding in given his background. I mean almost any other country with a Scientifict luminary like that would pretty much let him/her choose to spend his later years however they wished, in whatever role they wanted....and wish them only thanks for their contributions to not just them but the whole world. That's the whole ideal of the UN to begin with, not just made up of countries....but for that which exists beyond countries and nations.

Ultimately, buddy, it's Pakistan's business. I can only regret with bitterness that he was not born an Indian. How we would have drowned him in love and affection.

Its unfortunate to see a national hero being targeted like this all through out his life

In Hindu dogma, he could be so; there is nothing impermissible in practical terms. Strange, but true.

To be very honest, I wouldn't be surprised if those allegations were cooked up by some radical at the top of the food chain.

...................an international hero.........
Koi zabardasti hai? :P

To be very honest, I wouldn't be surprised if those allegations were cooked up by some radical at the top of the food chain. Remind me, Who was this DG ISI?

Akhtar Abdur Rehman. DG CI, Brigadier rank, DG Security Nuclear program, Lt.Gen rank both belong to Fiqqa a Jaffriya. Zia ul haq kept munir ahmed at the top position despite the allegations and it was speculated he done that so to feed americans wrong information about nuclear program making munir ahmed sort of triple agent
