What's new

Does the PN need an aircraft carrier?

It is not the carrier per se which is expensive..it is the carrier support group and operational costs.

India with a multi billion advantage in defense budget runs a threadbare carrier group around the Viraat simply because she does not have enough ships and submarines.

I would be curious in seeing the make up of the support group once India get the IAC and Gorky into service. If I count right most of India's current ships will have be on carrier escort duty unless India massively increases the no of ships she has.

What used carrier would that be, exactly? Which country has any available?

And as for mini-carrier like the Chakri Naruebet, what would you fly from it given that Harrier is out of production and being phased out of UK/US service?

The HMS Invincible is available along with the old British Harriers if someone is really interested.

Clemenceau : aircraft carrier in service from 1961 to 1997
Foch : aircraft carrier in service from 1963 to 2000
HMS Invincible

Forget about the Carriers , how about leasing some LA class subs from US..!

Clemenceau is scrap metal...Sao Paulo is not for sale.

The Invincible is available and so is the new British QE class carriers...the Brits are trying to get rid of one of them..maybe if Brazil buys one of the QE class ships the Sao Paulo may become available for sale.

Exactly. This is why we have started working on multibillion Destroyer and frigate programs. All our docks are full, so some of them are being built for us in Russian docks. We have around 10 Shivalik class, 6 Talwar class frigate planned, and 7 Kolkota clss destroyers, along with 3 newer type of destroyers under planning. We will also be getting our 6 scorpenes till then. And the RFP for newer type of submarines has been out. Will get its results too.

Thats 16 new Frigates
10 New Destroyers
12 New Submarines

So we're very serious about our Naval expansion and domination in the Indian ocean region.

Originally due to be retired in 2016, Ark Royal will instead be decommissioned by late 2010 or early 2011, as part of the Navy restructuring portion of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. After Invincible was decommissioned in 2005, and with the retiring of Illustrious expected in 2014,

Only HMS Illustrious remains operational for now

The Sea Harrier aircraft was withdrawn early from Royal Navy service in March 2006 and replaced in the short term by the Harrier GR9

With the withdrawal of the Royal Navy's Sea Harrier in 2006, the RAF's Harrier fleet is tasked with the missions that it used to share with those aircraft. In 2006, the GR9 also entered service with the Fleet Air Arm when the first former Sea Harrier squadron reformed. The GR9 was expected to stay in service at least until 2018, when the first F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) was due. However, following the Strategic Defence and Security Review, it was announced on 19 October 2010 that the Harrier would be retired in 2011 and that the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35C would become the main strike aircraft for the RAF.[7][8] On 24 November 2010, the Harrier made its last ever flight from a carrier, incidently also the last flight from the carrier HMS Ark Royal (R07) before retirement.[9] The RAF Harriers are due to be retired before the 31 March 2011.[10]

No nation, including India, has made an attempt to pick up these jets from the UK: they are reaching the end of their service life.

i think then you will never get the carriers.....:rofl:

Keep thinking then... maybe the world events that are about to unfold would change your thinking in some way perhaps...

and why dont you want us to be united again as one state? instead of ongoing hostility and threats of war??

It will be a drain on PN if we go for anything like that -- we did away with the County Class Guided Missile destroyer HMS London very quickly. That is the reason we did not go for USS Fletcher

But the Ark Royal will be available with engines shortly if someone is interested.

She started on her final tour on december 3rd 2010 before decomming from RN service (on the 5th?). Where do you get it from that she will be available for sale at all (other than for scrap), what is the source for that? Besides, what to fly from it?

Twitter / HMS Ark Royal: Decommissioning pennant ho ...

An era ended on Nov. 24, when Royal Navy flagship HMS Ark Royal launched its last-ever Harrier GR9. In December, it will be decommissioned and the Harrier force retired

(Sea Harriers already decommed much earlier, none sold and none offered for sale)

Instead of getting an Air Craft Carrier, we should get the Chinese to set up a Naval Base. Gwadar or Oran should be good.

That would be a bigger threat to India than if Pakistan had 10 Air Craft Carriers.
