The fertility rate of country is rising for the first time in nine years South Korea has seen a dramatic shift in its demographics. After a protracted period of decrease, the fertility rate made a significant reversal in 2024, rising from 0.72 children per woman in 2023 to 0.75 children in 2024. A number of causes, such as a spike in weddings after COVID-19 related delays and government programs to help families are responsible for this increase.

Given that South Korea has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world the increase in births is a positive development. If present trends continue the 51 million people who currently call the country home are expected to be cut in half by the year 2100. South Korea's fertility rate is still well below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman required to maintain a stable population, even with this recent increase. South Korea fertility rate is still well below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman required to maintain a stable population even with this recent increase. The government has put in place a number of measures to promote childbirth, such as increased parental leave, childcare assistance and financial subsidies. These policies have not stopped the long-term decline in births though as expensive housing and childcare expenses continue to discourage many people from beginning kids.

A change in the society views family and parenthood is reflected in rise in marriages and births. Statistics Korea official Park Hyun jung claims that views toward marriage and parenthood have changed. Recent increase in births provides some hope as South Korea struggles with an aging population but it also highlights need for more all-encompassing solutions to guarantee long-term demographic stability.
