so he inherited a strong empire and made it weak. he could expand thru war because akbar built a strong empire by being inclusinve. so who is great akbar or aurangzeb.

ur right he inherited a strong empire and made it weak..lets say even though he inherited a large empire and he wanted to make it larger.but with his policies and the technology restriction in those days to administer a large nation made the empire weak.no doubt akbar is greater compared to him but thats not how historians see it..babur,humayun,akbar,jahangir,shahjahan and aurangazeb are considered greater mughals and the rulers after them has no significance as the empire lost its significance later and many other empires rose to prominance.empire began to deteriorate only after aurangazeb.

Thats an undisputed fact...but my OP was asking a different question..

Can Mughal Empire be regarded as superpower like Rome and Persia? It certainly seems to have all the ingredients..

It was a greater power than the "greatpower" definition...

I wonder what has to say about OP and this ..

i personally like akbar and mughal empire.
babar,humayun and akbar worked there arse off to create such a great empire and the later generations screwed it up.

the likes of jahangir,shah jahan and aurangzeb screwed it up.
aurangzeb would have crushed the marathas if he would have used good tactics rather than using his ego.

aurangzeb was not greatest. he just inherited the system left behind by akbar when hindu and mu were freinds and so could sustain power. the true power of a king is shown after he dies and for how long the empire survives. on that aurang was the worst because he alienated hindus.
eg. ponting is considered most successful Aus captain. but really the credit goes to Mark Taylor and allan border.
but after ponting Aus has been going downhill. So really the greatest aussie captain was border / taylor.. not waugh/ponting.

Mughals had a mix Mongol and Turkish ancestry no doubt but they favoured Iranic or Persian language and culture with little tinge of local culture rather than Turkish ones
