Do India's Space Program and Mars Mission Make Sense?

The responses of most Indian posters in this thread confirm the point I have made: India needs to prioritize investments in its social sector to improve its human resources rather than waste money on space program.

1. Feed its people. India is currently ranked along with sub-Saharan African nations on world hunger charts.

2. Build toilets to save its people from early death. India leads the world in open defecation and premature deaths.

3. Improve the quality of education. India's kids rank near bottom on international tests.

4. Improve the lives of 60% of Indians who engage in farming. Indian farmers are committing suicides at a rate of one every 30 minutes.

Dementia?

Mars mission will not solve any of India's basic problems. If anything, India's space program distracts attention and diverts resources from India's real problems of lack of social sector development in education, health care, nutrition and infrastructure....

leftists and so many others in USA say the same thing about American space program.

Please get out of this "main na maanoo" attitude.

Space travel is just a way to dream, and if Indians spent tiny fraction of their budget on sending a mission to mars, then rejoice.

Even if you had forced them to spend mars mission money on roads, it won't change much on the ground.

Learn to dream, Sir
Learn to dream big.

Learn to dream?

How about dreaming for a well-fed, well-educated and healthy nation which can reach for the stars...far beyond our own solar system?

How about dreaming for an industrialized and prosperous nation where 7000 Indians do not have to die everyday from hunger? A nation where 200 million Indians don't have to go to bed hungry each night? A nation where kids do not rank at the bottom on international tests? A nation where a farmer doesn't have to commit suicide every 30 minutes?

Can tis dream be achieved by prioritizing basic human needs over wasteful PR projects by copying what other more developed nations did years ago?

Valid point. But luckily there is no Somalia, yemen, Congo like famine in India. So malnourishment? yes. But then if you are concerned about malnourishment in India, then you go ahead and do something about it. That's your focus.

And let the astronomers and scientists focus on the heavens.

Everyone in the nation doesn't have to do exact same job. Hope you understand.

Learn to dream?

How about dreaming for an industrialized and prosperous nation

space program and industrialization are not mutually exclusive.

India is home to the world's largest population of poor, hungry, illiterate and sick people who lack basic sanitation facilities. India's share of the world's poorest has jumped from 22% in 1980 to 33% now.
Does it make sense for India to waste its resources on a space program?

AS to your wisdom about "space program and industrialization are not mutually exclusive", look at India's industrial capability in relation to next-door China's:

India-China annual trade volume now adds up to about $70 billion, and India is running a massive $40 billion trade deficit with China. China exports high-value, high-tech machines to India while India exports low-value commodities to China.
