Do India's Space Program and Mars Mission Make Sense?

i would also encourage pakistan to invest in space. this investment will ignite young minds. a pakistan, and india competing in space is much better than on kashmir.

naaaah. let's not continue $hit shoveling.

No need to drag K word in this discussion.

Thank you.

ndians do agree we are poor and still long way to go , but that doesn't mean we cut spending on the other programs.Look it as investment for future rather than expenditure in current form.

I really admire your honesty. You know this is the difference between you and Pakistanis. You know your weakness and you want to overcome it.

@ Mr Haq trust on me, you are sounding like a retard here. Even if they are poor don't they have a right to explore something. They are doing it from their hard earned money. Science and Technology comes in their priority and they are diverting a small fund towards it. Read it somewhere that it barely costed 7 Rs for an Indian to make it happen, What does that 7 Rs has done for an Indian ? This 7 Rs has helped them to learn something new, their efforts are being appreciated through out the world, they are in top countries when it come to space research. What Pakistan has got when they don't spend even a single penny in this kind of adventure ? Moreover your poverty charts does not make sense. Looks at their population and your population. They are almost 7 times bigger when it comes to population. They have 30 below poverty line and Pakistan has 20 percent so instead of letting them down I would appreciate if you can write something to motivate childrens of Pakistan to do something constructive for the country and dream big. Thank you.

So India should shut down airlines, railways, everything and spend all that money on biryani distributed at data durbar and temples?

What kind of logic is that Riaz bhai.

Do you understand the difference between building infrastructure and funding a space program?

India can;t even build its infrastructure from its own resources. And its running a space program on borrowed money?

India runs huge trade and budget deficits year after year.

There's grinding poverty in resurgent India....not exactly the kind of society that should waste money on space exploration. Instead, it needs to invest in its social sector to improve its social indicators which are currently like those of sub-saharan Africa

But how? What steps needs to be taken? Industrialization? How much workforce can agriculture industry absorb in 21st century? Or do you have supporting data of generated revenue/sq area of land in manufacturing to agriculture based economy?

Yes, most Indians are fully aware that there are much bigger problems to be tackled. But as you might have read, this project cost $ 75 million, relative peanuts compared to India's GDP of $ 1.9 trillion. It's not like other countries were utopian wonderlands when they were investing in space were they?

You are missing the point here. The Mars mission is a technology demonstrator.

The space technology market is now worth $300 billion and India has a very little share of it.

In last 20 years ISRO has earned only $750 million for India. Most of the forex earned is from launching satellites and services. With the success of MOM, ISRO can bid for many more such projects. Earning $1 billion a year should be achievable in 2-3 years.

The concept is similar to IT outsourcing, which in the last 2 decades has grown to $100 billion per annum business for India. If, properly nurtured and with optimal involvement of the India private sector space tech can be a success story like IT.

Of course, any forex earned helps in improving the lives of the poor of the country, including building toilets.

@RiazHaq Rofl. As you seems like an economist. Can you please differentiate between External Debt, Internal Debt, Fiscal Deficit and Balance of Payment?

You know India is one of the country, which have least external debt.

I know you will dont understand. Your obsession making you blind.

Indian space program makes perfect sense. India is a very big country. The total government spending is gigantic compared to spending on space program. Indian government receives more than 220 billion in direct tax revenue. They spent 75 million on mars mission. Thats only 0.05% of their tax revenue. So we can say that this mission has cost peanuts to the indian government.

Accounting only agriculture based economy, and factoring in the growth in production because of accurate prediction of weather, ISRO contributes more than $10 billion every year. While the budget of ISRO stands at paltry $1.1 billion USD. This excludes the revenue of $700 million ISRO generated by launching foreign satellites, or the communication framework used in service based industries aided by ISRO, which would amount to near hundreds of billions.

The super cyclone in India in 1999 costs a humongous 15000 lives, while the cyclone of 2013 had a casualty of merely a hundred or less than that, thanks to the data gathered from the remote sensing satellite constellations of ISRO. If economists like you would put a price on human life @RiazHaq
