Dipu flies to Russia Thursday, not Islamabad

daily sun | | Dipu flies to Russia Thursday, not Islamabad

Dhaka: Foreign Minister Dipu Moni flies for Russia on Thursday morning skipping the D-8 Summit in Islamabad apparently due to schedule conflict.

“She (Dipu) is not going to Pakistan. She’ll leave here on November 22 for Russia and be back on November 26,” a senior official at Foreign Ministry told UNB over phone on Tuesday.

Responding to a question, the official said the Foreign Minister would be visiting Russia for having talks on various bilateral issues and he declined to elaborate further.

On November 15, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said the PM is unable to attend the D-8 summit because of conflict in her schedule.

The Prime Minister was scheduled to represent in the summit by her International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, said a press release issued by the PMO.

A PMO spokesman said the Prime Minister had been very much looking forward to visiting Islamabad to attend the D-8 meeting of which she is one of the founding members, but she had to cancel her plan because of conflict in schedule. UNB

Dhaka, Nov 20 (bdnews24.com) – Foreign Minister Dipu Moni is not attending the council of ministers' meeting of Developing 8 (D-8) due to be held in Islamabad on Nov 21.

"The minister is not going to Pakistan to attend the D-8 Foreign Ministers' meeting. She will leave for Russia on Nov 22 and will come back on 26," the Ministry' of Foreign Affairs' Public Relations Officer Mohammad Manirul Islam Kabir told bdnews24.com.

However, he did not say the reason for the Foreign Minister to skip the D-8 foreign ministers' meet in Islamabad.

The D-8 summit meeting will be held on Nov 22 while council of ministers meeting on Nov 21, according to schedule.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also not attending the summit due to a schedule conflict and she is sending her International Affairs Advisor Gowher Rizvi to the meeting.

"I will be leaving for Pakistan today and will attend the summit meeting on behalf of the Prime Minister," Rizvi told bdnews24.com.

Earlier on Nov 9, Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar came to Dhaka on a short visit to formally invite Hasina to attend the summit.

During the Pakistani minister's visit to Dhaka, the government had urged her that Pakistan offer unconditional apology for the genocide its troops had committed during Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971.

But Khar responded to the demand by advising Bangladesh to look forward and forget the past.

@SamranAli Awami league believes in Kamal Ataturk type secularisation, complete isolation from islam and anything muslim! But our people don't! The only reason they were voted to power because of BNP's Zardari style corruption. Awami didn't win a single local election after that!

But D-8 is mainly for economic and development its not saying you anything about islam though all countries are muslims, but if you want secularism it means you sould not have any relations with muslim countries.

Who cares when much more significant nations are attending the Summit.

Who said Bangladesh is not attending.... Why do people comment without reading the article. BD will be represented by one of the most powerful of the PMs advisors. BD is not ignoring the D8 it'd just the PM and the FM has other things to do. It's a matter of priority with possibly a little mix of BD politics thrown in. But ppl Bangladesh will be represented in everything to do with the summit.

actually BD is not serious in D-8 from begining, dont know why they included it... Membership should be terminated.

its bad for BD here.

Who cares when much more significant nations are attending the Summit.

READ....before commenting....

Plz not again................. This topic has been discussed to death.

Bangladeshi Govt have more important things to do than to attend the damn D8 summit. The summit was inconflict with their scheduled visit and appointments so they have sent there advisor as their representative.

Whats the issue they have attended the summit and our Pakistani president praised them so it mean we have acheived whatever we wanted to achieve.

Stop being childish now . Act like grown ups.

Who defines these rules that if anyone follow secularism then they should not any relation with Muslim countries? I know Pakistan GOV is much more intelligent than you, but just curious from which college or institution you have shaped your such brilliant knowledge about world politics? Do you know kid, that your most trusted ally and all GCC nations are partner to the West and NATO, who are supposed to be most anti islamic people as per some people like you in Pakistan.

Bangladesh is free to do what it wants. However, they must remember one thing they will only be stabilized if they remain connected to south asia. They must learn from Pakistani mistakes of pretending to be Arabs while in South Asia.

You can say, BD wants to be a bridge between two developing regions. South Asia with the SE Asia. It is same as Turkey. It constitutes as a bridge between Asia and Europe. So, essentially we will have to play a double role. However, Burma is an impediment to the south asian connection with SE. In the future, Pakistan and Afghanistan can play similar roles, a bridge between south asia and central asia. I think, USA is helping Afghanistan to build a railway line from Uzhbekistan to a point inside Baluchistan. So, essentially a country's geographic location decides what role it can play.

With the huge amount of pressure incessantly being piled upon Burma over the Rohingya crisis they are changing their tone and talking of restoring citizenship to Rohingyas. Once this is done and fully implemented (Burmese regime are chronic liars and often give false promises they never implement) then we will have completely normal relations with Burma and can be a:

1. Bridge between India and China ("China") the two largest economic markets in the world.

1 billion + & 1 billion + populations respectively.

2. Bridge between ASEAN and India.

0.6 billion+ & 1 billion + populations respectively

3. Bridge between mainland India and North-eastern India (which is even what the government of India wants)

1 billion + & 0.03 billion populations respectively.
