Dhaka under pressure to sign US military co-op deal

There is not a single negative comment from India's side vis a vis the US-BD cooperation, forces one to believe that it's in consonance with India's objectives as well. And given that the US envisions India to play a bigger role in global affairs and doing something in India's backyard without considering Indian sentiments is absurd.

1) US should think about India's sentiment when it is trying to supply weapons to its small neighbour Bangladesh. But, USA may not care about that. Think of US-Pakistan relationship since 1950s. This relationship is still strong, but USA did not care about Pakistani sentiment when it started to deal with India.

2) The same thing might have happened to the BD-US relationship that is growing day by day for the last few years and has culminated to a point whereby the mighty USA is trying to sign a bilateral treaty under which it can provide huge amounts of weapons to the BD military.

3) Note that there was a time when India did not want even a standing military in Bangladesh. It wanted a snake without the poison tooth in its east. But, the people and the military of BD struggled hard to make their military strong. With US connection our military will run at top gear.

Lack of any reactions definitely suggests so, and considering the fact that all US diplomatic visits to BD were after or before New Delhi visits points in that direction. I see the whole direction of events as something to do with 2014 and also reducing influences and options of third countries, a new energy corridor to facilitate Myanmar as well, and larger Indian influence in its immediate neighborhood.

What neighbourhood you are talking about? Is it Nepal, sikim and Bhutan? Even the tiny SL has successfully kicked your *** very badly. So, do not try to meddle in the affairs of other countries. They are not Indian lackeys. Keep yourself within your country. That is better for your superpoor regional power.

LOL, the mighty BD warning India, I agree the present Sri lankan regime is an irritant and India is at its wits end how to manage them, We are providing many aids to Sri Lanka but China is matching up and infact is getting a toe hold into Sri Lanka. We may be able to turn it around in Sri Lanka eventually, Nepal is one more worry regarding China's influence. India needs to do a lot of work in its neighborhood in the next couple of years.

Bangladesh is a cakewalk btw. And when has the US even bothered about Pakistani sentiments in any of their foreign affairs.

It's okay, India has done enough. No worries :enjoy:

Another news report from 'Amader Orthoniti' says of the 'Base Support' in the draft treaty. I tried to post it, but found it does not come out well. In my opinion, base support does not mean an outright leasing of a military base. But, I do not know what it really means. Could it be an arrangement of facilities for the visiting US military personnels?

We are talking about military alliance here. We already have a strong trade and economic relationship with USA.
"BD Is the 7th largest country in the world" that is what USA said. They know how to deal with countries independently and they dont need any Indian advice to do that. USA knows it very well and BD already made that clear that USA must deal with Bangladesh independently otherwise there wont be any deal. They also know after BNP coming to power, the situation will be completely different. Besides BD military which USA has all the interest in have nothing to do with INDIA.

I never get this ......many bd's say this on pdf.....what is it based on????

i am pretty sure that Japan will be more than happy to kick uncle sam's a$$ if they get a chance.....

I think we had a temporary SOFA agreement during Operation Sea Angel.

A permanent one would undoubtedly upset both India and China.

Here's an interesting read:
Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA): Strategic Concerns of Bangladesh by Alok Kumar Gupta

In 1996 instead of a full blown SOFA agreement there was a one page note which is still secret. I believe the note allows the US military to enter Bangladesh in the case of a humanitarian catastrophe and to hold regular joint exercises like Operation Sea Angel.

100% agreed. That's why I want the fools ruling us to...I don't know disappear(?)

Yes we all have the same dream ......

Duly noted: What we are looking at is the most intelligent, the most cunning and the most ruthless entities to ever live.

There is a great deal of rivalry and competition in the region now with the USA, China, India and Russia all getting more involved. There is a an element of ruthlessness and desperation on the part of India and the AL to hold onto what they have and to retain the so-called Indian sphere of influence in the region. This is why the AL seems to be behaving so arrogantly towards the US in recent days. India has probably given a signal that the US is not needed.

Thats what i call revenge mate..........have you forgotten that Japan was humiliated by US in/after WWII;US went as far as to establish a limited dictatorship by Mc Arthur there by abolishing the powers of Japans king.....all it's colonies were taken away.....do you seriously think they don't want revenge???(of course they can't!)

Well....then perhaps American ambassador in BD plotted somewhat future geographical area of us and rated 7th largest based on that :butcher: .

seriously ???

i repeat my question-

Interestingly it also made Japan the second largest economy in the world. A position it held until this century.
