Mirpur (Urdu: میر پور), also known as 'Little Britain',[1] is a city and a tehsil of Mirpur District, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Mirpurs population is estimated to be 96,000, while the entire district has a population of 371,000. Mirpur is the cultural & financial heart of the mirpur divsion which includes the districts of Bhimber, Mirpur & Kotli. The city is Azad Kashmir's largest centre for Business, legal & education. Mirpur lies at the point where the Jhelum River breaks out of the heavily forested foothills of the Pir Panjal mountains into the plains of the largely treeless Punjab.

The Mangla Dam (Urdu: منگلا بند) is located on the Jhelum River in Mirpur District, part of disputed Kashmir under the control of Pakistan. It is the sixteenth largest dam in the world.The Mangla Dam is the twelfth largest dam in the world. It was constructed in 1967 across the Jhelum River, about 67 miles (100 km) south-east of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad in Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan.
