A Rs 25,000 crore proposal of the Navy for procuring four large amphibious warfare vessels is expected to be considered by the Defence Ministry here tomorrow.

A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister A K Antony is also expected to approve amendments in the procurement procedure to give a bigger role to the indigenous industry for supplying military hardware to the armed forces.
“We are looking to add four more Landing Platform Decks (LPDs) in our fleet to operate alongside INS Jalashwa, the only LPD currently in service. The proposal is expected to come up for discussion at the DAC meeting tomorrow,” a Navy official told PTI here.

The procurement procedure has already begun with the release of the Request for Information (RFI) by the defence ministry, they said.

The four warships would be procured under the ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’ category of the defence procurement procedure under which the Indian shipyards, both private and public, would be required to form a partnership with foreign shipyards for the contract.

The Navy would use the warships to transport Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), heavy trucks, armoured personnel vehicles and other heavy machinery along with big troop contingents.

Under the DPP amendments, the Ministry will further ease the ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’ category under which Indian firms are asked to have tie ups with foreign vendors to produce weapon systems indigenously.

As part of this, the firms would be asked to “achieve” 50 per cent of the cost of the system produced by it in joint venture.

The Ministry is planning to give the ‘right of first refusal’ to the domestic industry before the armed forces are allowed to look at the import option for procuring weapon systems.

Seems like India is building a full on Blue water navy with far reaching capabilities. We don't need such ships unless we are preparing for war in Indian ocean or somewhere close. ;)

Great news,
but all the shipyards are full and it will take forever to make them in India.Let someone else make em

probably this is what we are going to get.

^^.
Can we convert Mistral LPD without much modifications to VTOL type aircraft carrier which can carry F-35Bs and sea harriers

Are we planning to invade somalia in 2025? Waste of Money. Why don't we buy more subs/scorpenes from this money.

These arr to protect our Islands, not to go to war.

Not everywhere you need your scorpene. Their are certain tasks in amphibious operations where you need to deploy your army very with support of navys logistics. So they are for that use.

From which angle does this look like a defensive weapon to you

Protecting Andaman and Nicobar Island Chain in case of war with China and also Islands which are there in Arabian sea.

LOl china is not gonaa try invade A&N islands. They have no interests there. These ships prove Indian ambitions in the future. If any Indian ocean country messes with us, it's getting invaded period. This not for defence but for offence.

India has a lot of islands... having such a force is necessary. But we should raise an Indian Marine Division as well....

@MST @karan21 Indian navy very much need these kinds of ships. The need for them was felt in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami where Indian Navy being the largest navy of the region was offering all sort of help to the regional countries, but it was finding itself short of large ships like LPD/LHDs to transfer medical help etc. to the victims. Thats why IN first brought second hand LPD Jalashwa from USN & now planning to acquire new.

LPD/LHDs are more help in the time of PEACE than at time of WAR.

We have to prove to the regional nations that Indian Ocean is indeed INDIA's OCEAN ;)
