SIMFEROPOL: Crimea's parliament on Monday declared the region an independent state, after its residents voted overwhelmingly to break off from Ukraine and seek to join Russia.

In the same resolution, it said that all Ukrainian state property on the territory of the Black Sea peninsula will be nationalized and become the property of the Crimean Republic.

Sunday's referendum is not recognized by the West, and the United States and the European Union are preparing sanctions against Russia, whose troops have been occupying Crimea for several weeks.

Crimean lawmakers have asked the United Nations and other nations to recognize it.

A delegation of Crimean lawmakers is set to travel to Moscow on Monday for negotiations on how to proceed further. Russian lawmakers have suggested that formally annexing Crimea is just a matter of time.

Yep...but they have a pretty good excuse to build one now...don't you think??

Apparently, the unrest in Ukraine is created because of this only. Ukraine is close to Russia, Ukraine is perfect for the NATO to do an extension toward Russia. For example, if Russia got attacked by the NATO for doing something like Russians previously did in Georgia, the NATO could attack directly from Ukraine. It is important that it is close so Russia can be attacked from there easily plus Russia can feel the pressure of the NATO. If Russia is surrounded by NATO countries, it will be less likely that Russia will carry out a military operation in the former Soviet states.

The same thing happened in Hungary during the Kosovo War and the Serbian conflict because the NATO wanted Hungary to join so that they could use the Hungarian AF bases and attacked Bosnia directly from its neighbor country. Being a NATO member is good because the alliance is mutual: you get support in case of an attack plus you give support to other countries in case they get attacked. If Russia happens to attack a NATO country, the NATO has the authority to intervene in order to help its member country.

But why did Russia take the bait??If they hadn't taken Crimea wouldn't it be difficult for the US to justify another base??Why annex a part of a country in the 21st century?

Last December, in a leaked phone conversation between Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador in Kiev Geoffrey Pyatt, they discussed a road map to replace the democratically elected government in Ukraine. After the Ukraine government was deposed though a violent coup, the US quickly recognized the unelected regime and warned Russia about interfering in the internal affairs of Ukraine.

Every country has what they see as strategic asset which they will do almost anything to keep hold of rather than lose. The Crimea is home of the Russian Black Sea fleet and Russian access to the Black Sea and beyond that to the Mediterranean. If Russia doesn't have Crimea, it would be left with 2 sea ports, which are 18,000 nautical miles apart, and both ports are ice-bound 6 months out of every year. Russia didn't annex it, Crimeans overwhelmingly voted to leave the Ukraine and join Russia. Now the US refuses to recognize the will of the people of Crimea to secede from lawless Ukraine and rejoin Russia. This is truly the height of hypocrisy.
