Concerned about China's rise, Southeast Asian nations build up militaries

What I see is a shift in strategy from the Chinese side. It seems like that they have decided that it's high time to expand its power and influence, and is now utilizing a centuries old strategy of "远交进攻", which means "allying with the far and fighting with the near"--a strategy used by Qin Shi Huang to conquer the 6 kingdoms and become the first emperor of China. They're clearly endearing themselves to Africa, the Muslim nations, and South America while moving in on the SE Asian nations and their American/European backers.

I'd say that most SE asian nations are doing that instead of China. They hedging their bets against Chinese domination by courting an annoying but largely benevolent military ally (US).

China is in SAm and Africa for resources not allies (how can they help in fighting america?) and China's muslim relationship is realistically limited to just Pakistan, but that's because Pakistan and China have been reliable allies for such a long time.

Actually I just read an article in the local papers about China's mining boom turning a load of small time miners to Billionaires

Chinese Quest for Resources Making Billionaires of Some Australians - International Business Times

Won't stop some aussies being racists. Money won't buy good will from Australia, despite some far-sighted politicians who want to draw Asia inclusive of Australia, the general populace are still more or less unwilling to give up their European identity and become multi-cultural (it's their choice to make of course).

Let's just say I am glad I am Canadian and not Australian

Btw mike, what is Emperor Lee's stance on the US. I hear that he is as much afraid of Chinese dominance as the other SE asian countries.

This means new American satellite states or maybe NATO ranks growing.

However for India it will effect trading with Singapore,an important trading partner for us.

True that, I believe its because the country is so cutoff from the rest of the world (Land mass wise) that they are not exposed enough to other cultures (except for rich Indonesian Chinese one lol). Whilst studying in Perth I can always fell hints of "racism" which was not apparent when I was in the UK.

To be honest I believe Singapore (or MM Lee as he likes to be called) is playing both sides of the card, Singapore needs US support (there is a big base over here) to fend off any disputes with Malaysia or Indonesia. Because the base has been here for quite some time the government is probably used to the US controlling the region and prefers to keep the status quo.

So in short I believe the government wants to keep the US in control around the region but will stay neutral if China increases its dominance. One other thing which is plays is a part is that no one really knows what the party intends for South East Asia by increasing their dominance and its probably fear of the unknown thats driving S'pore to lean towards the US.

China is buying a lot of mineral commodity from Australia, the sea trade lane is very important to China. On the other hand, what threat does China pose against Australia?

Is Australia worry that China will invade to take over the iron mines? That I don't think so. May be Australia wants to escort the iron ore carriers sailing to China, ha,ha.

It's not as simple as "i think China will invade Australia" You just can't have 1 country having a massive military and then all the countries around it having none.

Sure you can, look at Canada.

here is a movie by Michael Moore about Canada invades US or vice versa.

Ha, you can instantly tell you have never ever been to Australia because of your lack of knowlege about Australia. Australia is a Multicultural Country.

Currently, 5 million Australians were born outside of Australia. Even our current Prime Minister wasn't born in Australia.

So before you open your mouth with absurd claims, actually know what you are talking about.

But Canada is one of the closet allies to the U.S, that doesn't count.

Don't be naive, there are no permanent allies. Only thing that is permanent is self interest. It is just for now, their interests are more or less in tune with each other.

Yes there is. Canada and the U.S are too much alike to disagree on anything that would lead to war.

In in fairness Australia is not as multicultural as other nations like Britain or the US which has the advantage (or disadvantage) of having countries with totally different cultures next to them which immigrated and associated themselves with the population. Australia having a younger history it will probably take some time to adapt. The US took quite awhile to abolish slavery too.

So, basically you are saying that Canada is a whipping boy for the almighty Uncle Sam.

Ain't it a bleeding shame that HuaRen has reason to fear each other and that they have to seek safety in the arms of people like the US. But ultimately it is very understandable. It is in Singapore and its people's interest and I keep getting the feeling that Singapore is run like a business with CEO Lee and it's very much his baby.

I could be wrong about Australia and the right-wing rags I've read from there may not be representative (I certainly don't judge any people by the lot) but you're the wrong advocate for Australian tolerance
