Next year I plan for a HSR trip around China with my parents. That Shanghai to Kunming route looks attractive because of the scenery. Is it easy to stop over for a couple of days in every cities it passes? Do you have any idea about the price of the fares between each cities?

I feel the same, I will RETURN to Yunnan which is my spiritual hometown for the fifth time once the whole Shanghai-Kunming HSR is inaugurated. It is very ideal to start from Shanghai, stop in Hangzhou for the West Lake, in Jiangxi Province for numerous UNESCO world heritage sites, in Guizhou Province for its amazing natural wonders of karst landforms and multiculturalism, And at last, BACK to Yunnan Province for her charming snowy mountains, picturesque lakes and amazing spicy food!

If you can read Chinese, Australian Lonely Planet's local provincial guides written by locals are available, there are Yunnan, Guizhou, Zhejiang and Shanghai. The Yunnan guidebook is the most popular backpacker guidebook in China, second to none.

Prices for 300km/h bullet trains are generally 0.42-0.45 yuan per km (0.09 Australian dollar or 0.06 American dollar per km). This is the second class, comfortable enough. First class will be 0.65-0.70 yuan per km and there are also very limited VIP seats. Normally, second class seats account for at least 80% of total number.

For scenery of Yunnan Province, check my the page

Infrastructure in most parts of Yunnan is world-class, there are 2000+ guesthouses and hotels in the ancient town of Lijiang alone!

@AndrewJin , you are bad. lol.

You keep tempting us with all these beautiful pictures of Yunnan.

You are making it very difficult for me not to plan a trip to Yunnan.

I have also seen many beautiful pictures of Guizhou scenery too.

With the HSR network, more remote but nice places are now accessible. With the convenience, it will be a big boost to tourism development in these remote areas.

This is pleasing as most of these remote areas are poor. They may not be anymore in the near future.

Of course. If you don't mind, you can even create a thread of your photo album to share. You know sometimes it will be easier for most of us to visit places guided by some one's photos.

I have a thread, since moved to members club, I forget about it.

Jade Dragon Snowy Mountain in the north of Lijiang
A very maturely organised national park, though ticket (including electric shuttle bus and cable car) is not cheap. But considering the crazy cable cars(have 3 lines) at the altitude of 3000-4000m and impeccable maintenance of every corner at the huge park, I can understand.

Lijiang!
A popular saying online,
you are either in Lijiang or on the road to Lijiang.
I'm now literally still on the road.

One of the 2000+ guesthouses in Lijiang, very reasonably priced and the room is at least comparable to a 3-4 star hotel in Shanghai. Owners of such guesthouses are mostly those who used to work in big cities and then ditch all they have there and find their new lives in Lijiang.

Highway to Shangri-La
Next time, when the expressway is finished, all tunnels then, you won't see such scenery any more!

County road to Lugu Lake in 2010
Similarly, can't see such scenery now, new highway is all tunnelled.
