China keen to up military ties with Iran

A Chinese official has called for enhanced military cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and China to confront threats facing both countries.

Major General Wang Pufeng of the Chinese Academy of Military Science called for further military cooperation with Tehran in a Monday meeting with Iran's military attaché in China Colonel Mohammad Hassan Cheraghi in the Chinese capital, Beijing.

The Chinese official described the Islamic Republic as an influential country in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf and said the Chinese army was keen to expand military ties with Iran's Army, IRNA reported.

Wang pointed out that regarding Iran's experience in anti-piracy fighting in the Gulf of Aden, the naval forces of the two countries could also exchange experience on anti-piracy missions.

He went on to say that military cooperation between the two countries was further developed after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and was now at a favorable level.

The Iranian official, for his turn, said that the exchange of military delegations was a major step toward developing bilateral military ties.

Colonel Cheraghi expressed hope that Iran and China will enhance mutual ties in various areas, including military relations.

Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sunday met here with Zhang Gaoli, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Party chief of China's Tianjin municipality.

Zhang, heading a CPC delegation, extended greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao to Peres.

China and Israel have seen steady development of relations and frequent high-level exchanges since the establishment of their diplomatic ties 18 years ago, Zhang said, adding that the two countries have carried out extensive economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation.

China appreciates Israel's adherence to the one-China policy, Zhang said.

Strengthening and further developing Sino-Israeli friendly relations serves the fundamental interests of Chinese and Israeli peoples, as well as peace and prosperity in the Middle East, he stressed.

Zhang said China is willing to deepen practical cooperation with Israel in various fields, and to promote the exchanges between political parties, governments, legislatures and the two peoples.
