Even Canada has a good number of poors. Elimination of poverty does not conflict with greater openness and freedom.

Canada doesn't even has as many people as China has poors. I would prefer economic freedom for the people before political freedom.

Where is this poll you speak of? What is the sample frame? How many samples? What was the sampling strategy?

USSR doomed itself long before perestroika. Its fate was sealed after Yuri Andropov died.

Like you said no poll is ever going to be truly representative, but this should give you some idea about China's optimism and satisfaction with the current situation. I still talk to people at home, all of my family (both sides) are still in China, they are not rich people and they know that the government has its faults, but they know what's best for themselves.

Like you said no poll is ever going to be truly representative, but this should give you some idea about China's optimism and satisfaction with the current situation. I still talk to people at home, all of my family (both sides) are still in China, they are not rich people and they know that the government has its faults, but they know what's best for themselves.

Optimism in one sampling frame does not mean the same as another sampling frame. I still have not seen what sampling strategy they took. From the bolded part, they are most likely samples from major urban areas who benefited most from the economic boom. In times of economic woes however, government faults will magnify. Shortcomings are meant to be corrected, not swept under the rug. Political reforms are a way to ensure future stability of society.
