Army dispatches 17 trucks of relief goods daily

Staff Report

LAHORE: A total of 30 consignments with an average of 17 truckloads of relief goods daily had been dispatched by the Pakistan Army from Lahore Garrison to flood-stricken areas of southern Punjab and interior Sindh during the last one month.

This was stated by Lahore Corps Logistics Commander Brigadier Iftikhar Ahmad, while speaking to the media at Fortress Stadium. He said that so far, 5,700 tonnes of relief items had been dispatched, while the total figure of trucks dispatched so far was over 500.

Besides, four sorties of C-130 aircraft carrying relief goods have also been sent to Balochistan. Brigadier Iftikhar informed that the Pakistan Army had established over 22 flood relief camps in Lahore Cantonment and the city.

He commended the response of the philanthropists, donors and social welfare organisations and emphasised the need for greater solidarity with the displaced brethren during Eid. He said that family Eid packages based on two-week rations were being dispatched on priority.

In view of the magnitude of the catastrophe that has led to colossal loss of life and property, a greater contribution would be needed to further augment the overall national effort towards rehabilitation of the affectees, he added. He said that water was receding in certain areas and the affectees were preparing to return.

Thus a greater effort was definitely required to provide sustenance and support in the initial stage to give them a new start.

Meanwhile, another consignment of 41 truckloads of relief goods were dispatched from the Lahore Garrison to flood devastated areas of southern Punjab on Thursday.

The relief items included donations worth Rs 0.8 million by students of Lahore Garrison Education System and six tonnes of relief items by the Sikh community of Pakistan.

Pakistan Army's ability to expand anti-Taliban operations 'strained'

Farhan Bokhari JDW Correspondent - Islamabad

The Pakistan Army's capacity to expand operations against the Taliban in the country's tribal areas along the Afghan border has become "strained" weeks after the army was called to lead efforts for providing relief to 20 million victims of floods from the past month, senior Western defence officials have told Jane's .

While Western defence analysts see no signs of the Pakistan Army backing away from locations it has cleared of Taliban presence in a number of campaigns since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there are growing concerns over its ability to expand further operations.

"Opening new fronts for the Pakistan Army will be impossible any time soon," said one senior Western defence official in Islamabad. "There is no immediate threat of the army's withdrawal from areas it has already occupied, but that is where things will stand for the moment."

As flood-related destruction widens across Pakistan, starting from the northern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and continuing down to the central Punjab province and southern Sindh provinces, army troops have become increasingly involved in providing immediate emergency relief.

In addition to the large number of people displaced by the floods, more than a quarter of Pakistan's farmlands have been hit, with scores of farm animals killed. Senior Pakistani government officials say the resulting economic setback caused by the destruction will probably force the government to cut its expenditure, although defence-related expenditure is expected to remain intact.

"With the army holding the centre of this effort, we cannot scale back on defence spending for now," said one official. Western defence officials say that Pakistan's return to relative normalcy is a key concern for the US, which is seeking to overcome opposition from Taliban militants in Afghanistan and needs Islamabad's support for succeeding in its overall military effort.
