BREAKING Two police officers and passer-by shot dead and woman taken hostage in Liege, Belgium

Two police officers and a passer-by have been shot dead at a cafe and an attacker has been "neutralised" after taking a woman hostage at a school in Belgium.

The officers and the passer-by were gunned down at Cafe des Augustins in Liege city centre at about 10.30am on Tuesday.

Two other police officers were wounded.

The gunman fled and took a female cleaner hostage at the Athenee de Waha high school.

According to Belgian sources,the attacker just got out of prison yesterday for drug trafficking. The man is said to have been radicalised in prison. According to police sources he shouted god is great in arabic during the attack.

According to the prosecutor's office in Liege,the attacker followed two officers then stabbed them and seized one of the officer's weapon before shooting dead both of them. He then fled and killed a passer-by who was in a car.

He then entered the high school, where he took a lady as hostage. The police intervened and the man got out of the school while firing,wounding several officers before being shot and killed.

I hope with all my heart that the perpetrator is not a Pakistani. Either way, something needs to be done against radical Islamic extremists. Any non-Native European who is involved in terrorism needs to be executed and have their entire family deported to their countries of origin. All people who commit heinous acts like this are mentally unstable, be it an islamist or radical left/right winger. He got converted and yelled 'Allahu Akbar', thus he's a terrorist in his own words, no matter what you say.

The two police officers are named as Lucile Garcia and Soraya Belkacemi. (45 and 53 years old)

Soraya Belkacemi was mother of two 13 years old twins who are now orphans,their father was also a police officer.

The third victim is known as Cyril Vangriecken,who was a 21 years old student killed while sitting in the passenger seat of his mother's car. He was preparing to obtain a teacher's diploma.

And obtained a gun and ammo in less than a day? In a country where it's forbidden to purchase guns if you have a criminal record? So he either obtained them from the black market - which he had had no contact with while in prison - or else he had help.

Local sources reported the man yelling 'Allahu Akbar', he was known to have a lenghty criminal record and reports of the jail he was saying suggest he was indeed radicalised, nothing is confirmed so far, but there's an investigation going on of suspected terrorism, something like that wouldn't happen if it would just be a 'failed white man'.

This is Cyril Vangriecken, a 22 year old student, may the poor man rest in piece.

The information I am getting is the women were partners, and was checking meters together. Why would the prep be able to stab both officers and stole their weapons? Wasn't the purpose of 2 men beat is to exactly work to prevent this from happening to begin with?

I have no disrespect with the Belgium police or the deceased officers, I just don't get it. Noted that I teach policing in Australia now and US before, so this is a professional question.

Even with the most vigorous of training regimens, a team of police officers checking meters is the least likely of all to expect a sudden, abrupt violent attack. Or perhaps the perp incapacitated them both before they had a chance to properly react.
