US pips Russia as 'lowest bidder' for heavy-lift 15-chopper deal

NEW DELHI: The US is now all set to bag yet another mega Indian defence deal, with the iconic Boeing-manufactured Chinook heavy-lift helicopters emerging as the cheaper option than its strong contender the Russian Mi-26 choppers.

Defence ministry sources said the commercial bid for the twin-rotor Chinook, which has seen recent action in Iraq and Afghanistan, has emerged as the "L-1 (lowest bidder)" in comparison to the Mi-26 after both the huge helicopters passed the extensive technical field trials conducted by Indian Air Force (IAF).

"The present contract is for 15 such multi-mission helicopters. The Chinook bid was lower both in terms of initial direct acquisition cost as well as life cycle cost. The contract negotiation committee will now finalize the deal for the Chinook," said a source.
:what:

Known for their powerful contra-rotating tandem rotors, Chinooks are being operated by around 20 countries for heavy-lift assault, troop movement, logistics support, aerial battlefield recovery and special operations. Capable of being refuelled mid-air for extended range, a Chinook can carry 55 combat-ready troops or over 11,100 kg of logistical supplies or weight.

This is the second time that American helicopters have outclassed — both technically and commercially — their Russian counterparts in recent months. As reported earlier, India is getting ready to order 22 heavy-duty Apache attack helicopters for around $1.4 billion.

Boeing's AH-64D Apache Longbow met all ASQRs (air staff qualitative requirements) but its contender the Russian Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant's Mi-28 Havoc had failed to pass muster during the field trials held by IAF.

Overall, the Indian armed forces are looking to induct as many as 900 helicopters in the coming decade, including 440 light-utility and observation, naval multi-role (90), light combat (65), heavy-duty attack (22), medium-lift (139) and heavy-lift (15), among others. Several of these procurement and production projects are meandering through the long-winding acquisition process.

The US is increasingly bagging deals in the lucrative Indian defence market, having already notched up military sales worth over $8 billion in the last few years. These include the $4.1 billion contract for 10 C-17 Globemaster-III strategic airlift aircraft, $2.1 billion for eight P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and $962 million for six C-130J "Super Hercules" planes. Negotiations are being finalized for acquiring six more C-130J as well as four more P-8I aircraft.

There was a lot of heartburn in the US after its F-16 and F/A-18 fighters lost out to the French Rafale in the almost $20 billion MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) project to supply 126 jets to IAF, which is in the final commercial negotiations stage.

Good News, Long live India US Relations :smitten: : this will increase the capacity of Indian Airforce, Love to see those birds supplying logistics for our troops in siachen,

India US Defence deals,

a) 12 C-130J ( 6 delivered, 6 Pending and US accepted it supply will be routed through Foreign Military sales, IAF is interested in More C-130J more orders will follow, IAF wants atleast 30-40 C-130J's. And I also expect another 4 C-130J for our Paramilitary forces etc.

b) 10 C-17 Globe Masters aircraft ( 10 aircrafts confirmed, IAF may order another 10 More although media reports are stating only another 6 aircrafts will be ordered, IAF may order another 10 to bring the number to 20.)

c) 22 Apache Helicopters with advanced radars and hellfire missiles, I expect this order will go upto 50 this means another 28 helicopters.

d) P-8I Poseidon aircraft's ( 12 confirmed as of now but the numbers may go upto 20 or 30), Many Indian members have specified that only 20 P-8 Poseidon will be ordered 10 for eastern sector and 10 for western sector. But I Wish we have to buy 30 Aircraft.

e) Javelin anti-tank missiles, thousands of Javelin anti tank missiles are going to be delivered via foreign military sales.

f) 145 M777 Howitzers are going to be delivered for Indian army, I wish India could order another 155 Howitzers to replace damaged Bofors guns, I think India must also negoitate with US for the supply of M9082 Excalibur munitions, M777 will be a good alternative until our Indigenious artillery guns are inducted.

Key Points:-

a) Boeing is committed for a long term strategic partnership with India when compared to its rival Lockheed Martin.

b) US is also interested in long term relation ship with India, I firmly believe that without a green signal from US government Lockheed martin and Boeing would not sign Joint Ventures with India companies.

c) Whether some of my Indian Friends agree or not Indian Military is impressed with the technology and performance of US weapons.

I hope more such deals will follow, Long live India US relations,

d) CISOMA and other agreements issue must be sorted out immediately, here i feel India can sign those agreements to acquire state of art weapons.

Awesome news :yahoo:
Chinooks can also be easily airlifted in India's Boeing C-17s as well as have less spare part issues due to its wide use all over the globe....:D

The Best part Americans r damn fast at deliveries n since Chinooks already have a big base they might be able to deliver us within a year itself...:woot:

I used to see these Boeing helicopter on US sky in a big number. US use them extensively....

Good choice for India

Does anyone know what variant of the Chinooks that India is gonna get? There are multiple variants so am not sure what India is going for.

BTW the Mi 26 is actually much bigger and much more powerful than the Chinook. The Mi 26 has been used to rescue stranded Chinooks in Afghanistan.

China also want chinook but the answer is damn no, congrats India ~You make me somehow jealous:hitwall:

Russian will be upset about this, but India's choice is quite right this time. USA helicopter is state of art, we would like to reverse it if Indian is willing to provide one :yahoo:
