Asia needs new military balance, not led by one major power: Indonesia's top general
Asia needs new military balance, not led by one major power: Indonesia's top general - Yahoo News

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Asia needs a new military balance that is not led by one major power, Indonesia's top general told Reuters on Monday, as the region becomes increasingly concerned over China's rapid expansion in the South China Sea.

"There are significant changes in the stable and calm conditions that existed in the region a decade ago," military commander Moeldoko said at Indonesia's military headquarters.

"So everyone has an opinion that China is a threat to the neighborhood. The region needs a new balance."

As a result of heightening tensions in the region, Indonesia plans to upgrade its military forces in Natuna and Tanjung Datu, areas of the South China Sea near China's claims.

Moeldoko, who retires as military commander in July, wants to bring together the United States, Japan, China and Southeast Asian nations at a regional defense summit next year in the hopes of easing tensions.

China claims most of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea, disputed in parts with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan, and denies accusations its actions in its own territory are provocative.

Seriously, I doubt that is the stance of Indonesia's government. Their government president wojoko has great respect for China president Xi. During his tough stance on illegal fishing issue. He sunk all capture nation fishing boat except China. His country is enjoying a massive economic boom with China trade.

I believen Indonesia is trying to ease region tension but no way, they will think China is the cause of all this tension.

The OP is a pro vietnam forumer. He will post things that suit his agenda.

Both the armies of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines are a joke. The city state of Singapore has better air force than Indonesia. The Indonesia buys only 6 Su-30 from Russia while it need atlas 60 to defend its vast territory of islands. They will lose territory to more power enemies due to their own incompetence.

Who's going to take Indonesian territory? Malaysia? Brunei? Sri Lanka? Australia? lol.

The most obvious are Chinese that may claim islands. The second are islander themselves that may claim nationhood as it happened Timor which gained independence. May be will have small island states protected by foreign states.

Countries are more sensible then an individual or your thinking

That is why India is arming itself to the teeth. The Indonesia with thousands of islands need powerful airforce and navy.
Yes if they face threats and no one can deny their right to protect themselves ..till then they will be good if they keep away the phobia ..

Why ? Does India needs weak Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia so that they can send their Navy to protect them from China ? Another reason to justify huge increase in Indian naval power.

No we are not in a position to protect anyone against china but a strong large country like china is always better than small irresponsible countries around us ..

It is India that is irresponsible by not following UN resolutions on Kashmir.
